Wi ley, chief chemist of the Department of Agriculture, will Inaugurate a series of experiments to determine the effect of alcohol on the human Stomach. But Dr. Wiley wants the hard, scentlflc facts. And Dr. Wiley awaits live things for his experiments. The Isle ol Pines suffered considerable damage from the storm. Many houses at Neuva Gerona and Santa Fe and in the Intervening country were blown down, much damage was done to the fruit crops and the wireless telegraph station was wrecked. Trains Have Been Greatly IVlryed and Some City Streets Have Been Rendered Impassible. Denver, Col., Oct. 24. The snow torm which began last Friday night still continues throughout Eastern Colorado, Southern Wyoming, North ern New Mexico, Western Texas and Western Kansas and Nebraska. Clearing weather In this region today is promised by the Weather Bureau. It is said to be the heaviest October snowstorm here of which there is any record. The total snowfall In Denver up to last midnight was twenty Inches, and several inches have fallen since that hour. The temperature continues to hover around the freezing mark, and thus far but comparatively little damage has been done. According to stockmen who are in Denver, the cattle on the range will not suffer greatly as a result of the storm. They are said to be In excel lent condition and well able to with stand a hard storm. Trains on both the mountain and prairie roads have been greatly de layed and some city streets have been rendered almost impassable. Other wise no serious consequences have yet resulted from the storm In this vicinity. Wichita, Kas., Oct. 24. This sec tion of the State experienced the first touch of winter this morning when a temperature of 40 degrees above sero was registered, a drop of 31 degrees since yesterday. At Intervals today rain haa fallen. A steady rain Is fall ing In Oklahoma today and the tem perature Is 88. Dog Is Dying of Grief. Marlon, Ohio, Oct. 24. Rex Is the name of the little brown fox terrier that is grieving Itself to death over his late master, O. Guy Johnson, a young merchant who committed sui cide several weeks ago, following to the grave his sweetheart, Miss Cora White, aged 19, who drank carbolic acid after quarreling with him. Johnson loved his dogs (he had two) but he loved Rex the most be cause nobody else seemed to care for him. In his farewell letters Johnson asked his friends to adopt Rex, but the ugly little canine refused to b adopted and became a vagabond. Sir Thomai Llpton yesterday decided to Issue an other challenge for the America'! cup to come through the Royal Ulster Tacht Club of Belfast. Trolley Car Runs Into a Pole. Schenectady, N. Y., Oct. 24. A Schenectady-bound Troy car of the Schenectady Railway Company failed to take the curve at Union and Mo Clelan Btreets yesterday, dashed Into pole, turned over on Its side and Injured a score of more passengers. Two passengers who were sitting each with an arm out of the window loBt their limbs and others sustained serious injuries. May Have a Dig Strike. New Orleans, Oct. 24. It Is said that as a result of the discharge ol ten machinists of the Algiers shop ol the Southern Pacific and because of alleged discrimination of long stand ing against their organization, ten thousand members of the Interna tional Association of Machinists may be called out on strike on that sys tem within a day or two. The men affected are la what Is known as Dis trict No. 11, extending from New Orleans to Portland, Ore. Refuses to Diaenas Reparation. London. Oct 14. W. K. Vander bllt arrived la Londea yesterday from a shooting season la Scotland. He went to Sunderland House aad there met the Duie and Duchess of Marlborough. Chicago, Oct. 24. Inquiry Into the death of M. J. Carpenter, alleged swindler, at the Stanton-avenue sta tion Sunday night, was made yester day' by the Coroner.-The Jury re-, turned a verdict that death had been caused by chronic nephritis and not as it was at first believed, by mor phine poisoning. A life Insurance policy for $20, 000, made out in the name of Car penter's wife, was found among the man's effects. Mrs. Carpenter Is said to he dying of consumption In Den ver. Attorney Cowdrey was instruct ed to turn the policy over to Mrs. Carpenter. Inveatlgnting Graft. Log Angelea, Oct. 24. Francis J. Heney, Assistant District Attorney ol San Francisco, and J. W. Burns, of the detective department of the Dis trict Attorney's office, were in Los Angeles yesterday to investigate a case of alleged graft by a San Fran cisco politician, In which the man ager of a theater In that city Is said -to have been the object of an at tempted hold-up. Mr. Heney was In consultation with one of the Justice! of the State Supreme Court, now sit ting here. Modento Has New Packing Company. Modesto, Cal., Oct. 24. Tne Mo desto Canning and Packing Company was organized here yesterday with 175,000 capitalization. Officers are to be elected on the return of the papers from the Secretary of State. The company will build a $25,000 plant consisting of a sixteen-ton cold storage and Ice plant, cannery and packing house. The leading stockholders and promoters are H. Christ, A. N. Brown, C. M.
