DR, WITHYCOMBE
IS STRONG
HI Nomination la Assured and
Ho W ill Carry Many of tho
Counties.
As the campaign advances the fact
that soino of the candidates for the
republican nomination for governor
are on able to reach even a good second
place Is becoming apparent, and as a
result many voters who had other
favorites, seeing that their first choice
is out of the race are coining over
bodily to the winning candidate, Dr
James Withyconibe of Corvallis,
whose nomination is now assured and
who v ill receive a far larger vote
than will be given any candidate who
has opposition. Dr. Withyuoinbe is
especially strong with the farmers in
I11 I)8rts of the
state, many of whom
in every county have a personal no
qimintauce with aud a friendship for
him, aud this has helped to make his
name a household word in all portion
of Oregon.
From all parts of the state come
assurances of support for Dr. James
Withyooinbe, and the indications are
that he will oarry a majority of the
counties of the state, some of them
by clear majorities. A vote for Dr.
Withyconibe on primary day, April
20 next, will be a vote for the next
governor. Albany Herald.

SEEKING GOVERNMENT

Grant
Pass Citizen Working

Get Water on Big Trn.ci
of Land.
Editor Courier: In reply to in
quires conceru'ig my Government
irrigating enterpriee, I with to fay
that I am not yet prepared to give my
Ulan
in detail. Dealing with the
government is necfssarily slow and
ttdious. I am now in correspondence
with the authorities as, to ways and
means and expect to be, able to sub
mit plans in a hort time. The plan
now in view is to have the govern
ment construct a high liue ditch that !
will cover all the country below Gold
Hill. This ill be about 00,000 acres.
It is intended to include all available
land between Merlin and Murphy.
I have studied the irrigation prob
lem in all of its phases aud have come
to the conclusion that the govern
ment can do the work more cheaply
and give better satisfaction than a
corporation. This plan is in keeping
ith the spirit of the present age. It
will head off all possibility of graft
or monopoly, leaving the people free.
To my mind, there can be no enter
prise that woald be of more general
benefit to the country. It will be to
Southern Oregon what similar enter
prises are to Utah, Colorado aud New
Mexico. It will mean railroads,
wagon roads, creameries and all kinds
of manufacturing plants. Our alfalfa
ill be to ns what corn has been to
the people of Kansas.
It would be hard to conceive of a
citizen so lacking in public spirit as
to be unwilling to help along so im
portant an undertaking. Of course
that class of men who are bere to get
something by defrauding the people
will not give as much encouragement,
but the people of Oregon have cer
tainly had enough experience with
grafters. The time has come when
we should learn to distinguish be
tween prosperity for a lavorcrd few
and prosperity for the entire people.
Most of as are willing to sacrifice
something for the good of all the peo
ple, but few are willing to sacrifice
anything for the benefit of a few ex
ploiters. STEPHEN JEWELL.
