FUTURE GENERATION
TO HELP BUILD ROADS

Brings Good Roads at Once.

more good roads than any other state

ment they do not put all the burden
on the present generation, but have
the next gunuration bear their share.
The California idea is that it is not
Just for the people of today to bear all
the ex pen ho of creating public! utilities
that will lio of equal benefit of those
to come later. With homes to make,
business and Industries to create
school houses, churches, halls, parks
to build and the many other develop
ment expenses incident to a new
country to nieet It is but justice that
the road building expense be devided
nd the payments made to extend over
period of years.
Blskiyou county Is t iking up the
good toad movement in earnest and
various districts of the country are
bonding to raise road funds. Re
cently ti.o board of supervisor of
that county sold the Little Shasta
wagon road bonds amounting to
S2,000 drawing (I per cent Interest
and are lu denominations of 51X) each
payable In 20 years. The KisKlym
county liank paid a premium of '.W
for them. Five bonds come due each
year on the 1st of March except the
last two years when seven for each of
those years will mature.
The district includes part of the
territory in Moulague aud Little
Shasta voting precincts aud his till
able property amounting to nearly a
million dollars, so that the increased
tax caused by the improveme nt will
be about no cents on each f 100.

ment plan of road building has been
adopted. The plowed surface will be
88 feet wide, including side ditches

crushed and well rolled, eight inches
In depth, with a rolled shoulder of
earth cm each side. The rock will be

rolled .
Copper Smelter Wins Suit.
Owners of copper mines in Scut hern
Oregou are interested iu the injunct
ion anit brought by the government to
restraiu the Mountain Copper Com
pany from operating their smelter at
Keswick iu Shasta coualy, by reason
Of the damage done to the vegetation
on the surrounding country. The
Company lost iu the. t inted States
circuit court and appealed their case
to the United States circuit court of
appeals and that court, which is next
below the United States Supreme
court, has decided that the company
nas the right to operate thrir
smelter. The smelter has been hot
down for the past year bat will now
probably start no again. The fumes
from the Takillua smelter has killed a
few trees in that vicinity, but It does
not appear to make the general de
struction that is alleged of copper
smelters.
To Avoid the Tax Rush.
The 8 per cent discount on taxes
will oease after 5 p. tn. on Thursday,
March )& and the taxpayer who does
uot pay before that date will have to
pat op the full amount. As yet taxes
have been coming in rather slowly
taxpayers doubtless thinking that they
will have ample time next week to
pay op. Judging by the rushes of the
past there will be a line of people ex
tending from the sheriff's office out
into the court bouse yard next Wed
nesday and Thursday who will be
waiting tbelr tarn to get their tax
receipts and there is liability that
those in the rear of this procession
will not get to reaoh the sheriff's
oflice before it is too late.
Sheriff Lewis and bis deputy Ernest
Lister will do their best to accommo
date the belated taxpayers, but they
can only look up the roll and make
out tax receipts for a limited number
during an oflice day and if a taxpayer
delays his coming until the last day
he will have only himself to blame
if he gets left out.
Aerial Tram at Greenback
The 40-stamp mill at the Greenback
mine is to hereafter mill rre from the
Martha mine as well as from the
Greenback mine. The ore is to be
transported the mile on an aerial
tram, which is now being put up.
Two of the three immense spools of
cable for the tram arrived last work
at Wolf Creek and it required six
span of mules to haul each of them to
Greenback and at the steep hills the
mules had to be assisted with a blcck
aud tackle.
Manager Bishop is keeping work
moving at a lively rate at the Green
back and now with the two mines in
operation it will have the largest pay
roll in Southern Oregon, other than
the Southern l'aoitlo railroad.
