A BIG VENTURE TO BE
TRIED IN PLACER MINING
Two-Step Centrifugal Pump to
Clear Mine of Water Gravel
to Be Hoisted 120 Feet.
Grants Pass, Portland and Boston
men are to inaugurate a mining ven
ture near Yreka that will be a big
undertaking and be a new method of
drifting for gold. The company re
cently organized to handle this propo
sition is known as the Blue Gravel
Mining Company and is composed of
H. A. Corliss, W. T. Cope and Charles
Gray of Grants Pass, Carl N. Jones of
Portland and C. A. Rimbach of Boston.
Mr. Corliss, who is one of the most suc
cessful hydranilo miners In Southern
Oregon, will bave charge of the work
at tbe mine. Mr. Gray, who is also
an expert in plaoer mining, will be
the foreman nnder Mr. Corliss. Mr.
Gray will go to the mine next week
taking hie wife with him. Mr. Cor
liss left for the mine Tuesday, but
his family will remain in Grants
Pass. Mr. Jones, the Portland part
ner has been in Grants Pans for the
past 10 days, and he accompanied
Mr. Corliss to Yreka. Mr. Jones is a
mining engineer and machiaist and
will have charge of installing, tbe
machinery that will be used.
The property embraces half a mile
of the channel of Greenhorn golch, a
tributary of Yreka creek, and a mile
and a half from the town of Yreka.
This mine was worked for several
years and over $2a0,000 in gold taken
out, bnt for the lant two years it has
been tied up in litigation aud idle.
The pay travel, so far as worked, has
proven very rich aud averages about
200 feet wide in the ancient channel.
It is 120 feet to bedrock and a large
quantity of water to handle has made
it a ccrious matter to work the mine.
The mine is now equipped with two
boilers, one of 60 and the other 40 H.
P. that operates a large plunger
pump. To keep the mine clear of
water with this kind of pump proved
a very expensive job, as the sand cnt
out the pumps so fast.
A new equipment entirely has been
ordered for the mines. A two-step,
centrifugal pump capable of handling
600 gallons of water a minute will be
installed, as will also a larger and
faster hoist for raising the gravel.
The present equipment will be need for
clearing out the mine and keeping the
water down while the new pump can
be set. It will be plncrd down in the
mine and will shove tin- water to the
surface. Tbe power will be on the
surface and will be transmitted to the
pump by a shaft. Steam power will
be used for the present, but if favor
able terms can be fecnred electric
power will be taken from the Siski
you Electrio Company's plant at Fall
rreek on the Klamath river. It is
estimated that ouly a flow of 250 gal
lons per minute will have to be taken
out of the mine, so the new pomp
will be able to keep the workings clear
of water. This water is need for
washing the gravel and is ample for
the purpose.
The entire bed of the ancient chan
nel will be worked, the earth above
being held up by large timbers as fast
as the gravel is removed. The gTavel
on being hoisted to the surface will
be run through slnice boxes to take up
the gold, the tailings then being run
onto a dump. Ab the water is a
steady underground supply mining
ean be carried on in the Summer as
well as in Winter, and it will be the
plan of the company to cany on work
the year around. Mining men who
are familiar with the property agree
tlvit it is one of the richest mines in
Siskiyon connty, and when properlv
equipped and worked will be one of
the biggest gold producers on the
Pacific Coast. Manager Corliss ex
pects to put on a large force of men,
so soon as the new equipment is in
stalled, and work will be carried on
dny and night.

Mr. Biatsdell, the superintendent of
tiie big mine down Grave creek has a
large consignment of pipe for that
mine. The railroad freight bill is
many hundreds of dollars as it is of a
large caliber. The Colombia mine is
miming on fall time. This mine gets
water from Grave creek.
We have some people from Michi

Leland and found the weather so
warm and sunshiny, they were agree
ably surprised for tbey bad been told
that it rained here nearly all tbe
time.
Tbe Summer birds are with ns.
We are having fine weather with an
occasional frost The ground has
dried so farmers can plow, but tbe
miners need water. The late big
rains gave them water for a time but
as the ground was not thoroughly
soaked before tbe last rain it soon
dried np.
Work has been shut down at the big
steam shovel ramp near Tonnel 9 and
only one man is there, as watchman.
The three locomotives and all the
dump cars are standing on the siding.
The cause for shutting Jown the
work of making the big fills at the
trestles was that the earth had be
come too wet to handle well. So
soon as the Winter rains are by the
work will be resumed with a large
crew of men. Wideawake.

Good Showing at the Opp.
C. A. Myrick came down from tbe
Opp mine last Saturday and Monday
he returned taking his family with
him. They will reside for the pres
eut in Jacksonville, but later on when
a house can be had he will move to
the mine so as to not have to walk
the mile from the town to the mine.
Mr. Mryick has been at work for the
past month at the Opp mine where
be operates a Burleigh drill. He
stated that operations were progress
ing like olockwork at the Opp and
that the 10-stamp mill is operated to
its fnll capacity and for 24 hours each
day includiug Suuduy. Five power
drills are employod in gutting ont
ore and in doing development work
and nearly 100 men are employed in
the various departments.
The Casey & McWilliaras mine,
which adjoins the Opp property, is
being developed and is showing np so
satisfactorily that a mill is likely to be
erected this year on if. Big prepara
lions are being made at the Bine
Ledge copper mine for extensive de
velopmeut and a large number of men
are being employed.
Startling But True.
Pjopln the world over were horri
fied on learning of the burning of a
Chicago theater in which nearly 600
people lost their lives, yet more than
five times this number or over 8000
people died from pneumonia In
Chicago during the same year, with
scarcely a passing notice. Everyone
of these cases of pneumonia resulted
from a cold and could have been pre
vented by the timely use of Chamber
lian's Cough Remedy. A gieat many
who had every reason to fenr pneo-
nionia have warded it off by the
prompt use of this remedy. The fol
lolwing is an instance of this sort:
"Too much raunot be said in favor of
Chamberlain's Cough Remedy, and
especially fur colds and influenza. I
know that it cured my daughter,
Laura, of a severe cold, and I believe
eared her life when she was threat
ened with pneumonia." W. D. Wil

No woman can look beautiful without
good health. A woman's gixnl health
depends on those organs peculiarly femi
nine, and which so often become disor
dered, causing misery and drawing-down
pain. Nature's laws are perfeot, health
endures if you obey them, but disease
follows disobedience. The distressing
complaint of woman are often brought
about by catching oold at a critical
period, breathing foul indoors' air and
long hour of work and nervous tension.
Go strait ht to Nature for the cure to
the forest. Dr. Pierce's Favorite Pre
scription is A'asVrc't cure for the dis
tressing complaints of women. Prof.
King, M. D., In his American Dispensa
tory, says of Black Cohosh or Black
Snake-root "our early American In

diseases of women. It i lurpanted by
no other drug, in congestive amdititmt
of the parts when then are dragging

Lady's Slipper root Is a nerve stimulant
Mid tonic, improving both circulation and
nutrition of the nerve centers favoring
sleep and cheerful condition of the mind;
of service in mental depression, nervous
headache, irregularities of women with
desipondoncy." Prof. King. Besides the
above Ingredients there are Golden Seal,
Unicorn and Blue Cohosh roots in Dr.
