I VMTOTT7D fioAKTS PASS.. OREGON.. FEBRUARY 2, 190b. ?71 I 5 ! ROGUE RIVER COURIER, GRANTS PASS, OREGON", FEBRUARY 2, JOSEPHINE COUNTY WAR RANTS SELL BELOW PAR Too Many Other Profitable In yutmtnli Hr for Capitalist to Put Money In. County Treaiurer J. T. Taylor, baring received from Sheriff George Lewit tbe amount reailzed in the re oent delinquent tax sale, ii now en gaged in balanolng bia booki and checking np outstanding warrant that date back following big last call, wblob wai for warrant endorsed np to January, 1003, preparatory to mak Ing another nail for warrants. This oall will be made about tbe middle of Kebroary bat owing to the small am available by reason of the little delinquent tax ' list, Treasurer Taylor will not be able to call in a very large amount of warrants. He will not make another call nntil in May, by wblob time it is expected that sumoient amount of taxes will have been collected on tbe levy of 1906 to warrant a oall. County Clerk 8. F. Cheshire is now making a copy of the roll for 1905 and giving on it the amount due by each taxpayer. This copy will be ready to tun over to Sheriff George Lewis by the last of this month, who will then be ready to reoelve taxes. City Treasurer Ool. W. Johnson has recently made a call for Grants Pass warrants endorsed prior to May 1, 1908. Though the assessed valuation of Josephine county and Grants Pass is nearly A, 000, 000, and the county and city debt is not large as compared with other counties aud cities, yet warrants are at discount, only large denominations selling at par. Tbis Is a strange condition when in most other counties of the slate war rants are at par and in some counties at a premium, as in Jackson county where warrants of f 100 or more will bring 3 per oent premium. Tbe cause for this discount on Josephine county and Grants Pats warrants is that tbey draw but 6 per oent interest and there are so many otber investments that are more profitable that capitalists put their money in oity and farm property, orchards, mines, timber and manu facturing plants. These warrants will not long remain at a discount for Eastern capitalists will be buying tbem np, for, as they are not subject to taxation, they are a first-claes security. Endorsee Mr. McConnell's Can didacy. We are glad to know that the friends of J. P. MoConnell of Merlin are urging him to let bis name come before tbe republican primaries for tbe office of sheriff of Josephine county. Mr. McConnell is a graduate of tbe Ashland Normal School and has been a very soccesHful principal of schooln in Douglas and Josephine counties. At present he is a merchant of Merlin and is a member of the county school board of examiner, if nominated for sheriff, be is sure to run well, for, two years ago, he ran down a Douglas county horse thief at Merlin, in a foot race of 150 yards, threw the tbief to the ground, tied lilin with a rope, find telephoned tbe Douglas county sheriff to come and get him. The thief was armed, but Joe was unarmed, and the capture was made in the darkness of a rainy evening. Mr. McConnell is an honext, compe tent aud gritty young man, to put up for the ofllce of sheriff. W. T. VAN SOOY. Ashland, Oregon. Frightfully Burned. Chan. W.
