Mll PATHETIC STORY OF SAILOR DIGINGS Tale ol Pioneer Days e-nd ol fx Little Orphe-n Girl Immediately after the discovery of gold at Sailor's Digging, now known Waldo, there was a great rosh for the Dew mines. Mod gathered there from all parts of Oregon and Califor nia, and among the first to reach the Mew Eldorado was a Frenchman and his little daughter, whose name's were Low. Little Brownie, as she was oallod, was the nrst wnitn woman who came to the place and was about 13 years of Kite. In those days of mad rash for gold when men were here today and there tomorrow, and everyone was a straugei to every one elfe, few questions were asked as to who or what one's neighbors were; and no one knew anything about the Frenchman more thao this he was a man of few words, and was much given to drink. Mr. Iw bought a cabin iu Allen gulch and here he and his little daughter took op their abode. Those mnst have been lonely days for Little Brownie, as her father was over at the stores drnuk every day, and she was left at home alone. Hlie was seldom seen, as she remained constantly at the oabin, bnt those who did see her, while passing o and down the gulch, all agreed that she was indeed a beautiful little maiden. They had been about three weeks in the place when one morning Mr. Low left the cabin as usual for the stores wheie he drank all day and in the evening someone, while pass ing over the trail to the gulch, found hi hi lying dead in the road. He had taken more whiskey than ho could stand and had died on his way home. His body wss carried back to the stores and the following moining was I laced in a box, a grave was dug on the hillside and here Mr. Low was buried. Little Brownie was there bnt she shed no teats, nor spoke a word to anyone, and when the wink of burying her father was overland the few miners who wero there began leaving the spot, the walked slowly back to her homo elnue. 'I lie miners went their diffirent ways and thought do more of the drunkeuEieiirhman. Of course thise nun supposed that the little girl had friends who would care for her and a we k had pssst d before any inquiries weie niaiio cm ct ruing t bo little maiden. It was then rtmcuibcrcd that she had not been seen since the day her falherwss burled. Inquiries were made thiough out I lie camp but no one knew any thing about the little girl and It be came the general npinicn that seme friend had ennied her away from the diggings and the whole matter was sood forgotteu. Several years after the disappear auce of little Brnwuie Low, some one found ou the hillside iu Allen gulch what appealed to he a grave and lying beside it was the dtcayed re mains of a woman. These ri mains lay fiu'H downward, a braid of long nark hair Covired I lie, white skull, a necklace of goldin leads ruciicled the neck and a mm II lusty dagger was found sticking point upward through the bouts of the breast. The sti ry of the finding of these remains was told at the camp, but no one knew anything about it until an old Irishman was found who rciiieni bered the burying of tlin Frcuchinnn ou the hill and the. suddeu disappear auco of the little girl, and the cruel knife found with the rt mains told plaiuly the fate of little Brownie Lett alone without father, inctlicr or friends, her grief was greater than she could bear and she had taken this knife, gone to her father's grave, lay down nn the ground and guiding the point of the knife to her heart, threw her weight upon it and her young life went out. Iter remains were gathered up, placed in a little box and there, after so long a time, by the grave of her father and on the spot wheie she had died, was buried all that remained of little Brownie Lew, of Sailor's Dig gings. The following from the Ashland Tribune is a rlesr statement of the plans of the liquor iuti rests to gain conlril of the wards in the various towns that they are aldo to ocutrol if separated from the other wards: Liquor men are invoking the initia tive for amendment of the local opt ion law, along the lines of the famous Jayne bill, which failed to paHS the Oregon Legislature last February by but one, vote. They will be opposed by prohibition forces and the Auti Saloon League, and will seek the aid of the anti-prohihitiun elemeuts. The bill which the liquor men offer would change the present lnw, which was enacted by the people at the prlls in June, HKII, in the following respr cla : liaise the numlwr of voles nict hsary to cull a I'rohibition tlectiou from 10 to ill) per cent. Make the law strictly a precinct option act, allowing just as now, an tlectiou to be called in any precinct iu the state. Preveut ti e gioupit.g of precincts touelher for a Droll ) bit ion election. Fii general elections as the lime for prohibit ion h cti jus. Take away the advantages held by the nrohibilion side unihr the present law and give "dry" and "wet" the same privileges iu elections. At least one of these proposed re visions seem just and right, if it is admitted that saloon men have any mlic nut rights. For instance the provision that if an (lection goes "dry," the dryness will cover a period of two years, while if it goes "wet, the ant i -us lr on people may cull au tlectiou the following year and perhaps knock out the sslnous. That is something like (linking witli loaded dice Hut the attempt to raise the per centage of voters necei-sary to call au clc'tion to decide tli local option question shot. Id be fought by the auti siilocn people. Ami the propom d amendment to allow au election to he called iu any single precinct is strictly a saloon measure, auit would act en tirely to their benefit. It is well known that in most towns, the saloons are largely bunched ini iu one ire cinct las in Ashland, for instance) and it is luu'illy well knowu that the saloon men gelierally control that precinct. It would be foolish to give tin in the advantage of contioliing one ward ou such an important qucst'oli, What would be gained if all the prt- ciucts went "dry" except one; the town would tie a saloon town just the same, sh if there, wero saloons in every ward, while the drunks would he scatli rtdall over the towu, and the atttuitaut misery s read to every precinct. Editoi- Courier: I have no dispo sition to be officious, but believing that the Southern Oregon Develop ment League as now organized is a step in the right direction, I wish to forecast a few of IU possible advan tages. ThiB league proposes 10 unite the people of all industries in one com mon effort to develop the natural re sources of Southern O'egon, and to secure snch legislation as will equal ize the burdens of taxation. We are livinir in au aee that demands systematic co-operation. I.; fact, we have reached the limit of industrial success except unner specially favored conditiouB. Wo are begiu ning to see the folly of selfish compe tition. All interests must rise or fall together. While nature has done much for Southern Oregon, there Is still much to be done before our people can enjoy that degree of comfort and prosperity to which they are entitled. Our ag ricultural advantages need increasing, and our transportation facilities need cheapening. With a system of irrigation equal to that of Utah and other western states, and a system of publio roads such as can be seen most anywhere outside of Oregon, there will be nouoedof immi gration boards. A ditch UK) feet above the level of Grants Pass would briug into cultivation about 2,0tH) acres of land that is now almost worthle-s. And this laud, too, would be specially adapted to the growth of alfalfa, fruit and vegetables aud would furnish homes for at least 4000 people. This would be development along the line of bread and butter. The real prosperous country Is al ways the one that makes plenty to eat and wear. It is worth very little to have men come into our country simply ai exploiters of our tlmbir and minerals.
