Liudsay with two or three other fellows went out on a bear hoot. being gone abont three weeks. They report Retting nine bears, two pan tliers, two wild cats and two f.xes. Jacob Wagner, in chopping wood Tuesday of this wrek, fell in some way and liort himself pretty badly probably breaking a rib. They went to Grants Pass the next day to see the doctor. It la late but will say the entertain ment at the school house ou the night of December 2d was a grand success. Miss Foss, the teacher, had the scholars well trained, and the evening was well spent. U. held on Friday afternoon was in teresting and well attended. Con siderable business was transacted, several articles on the subject of Peace and Arbitration were read and a poem by Ella Wheeler Wilcox "Woman and War" was recited by Miss Howard. Herbert Shattnck, a graduate of Cornell University aud a highly talented yonng man giving himself to the cause of temperance, was present and gave an interesting talk on Loyal Temperance Legion work. Mr. Shat tnck spoke to the children in a nnion meeting at the Methodist Ep'scopal church ou Sunday afternoon. His subject was David and Goliath and the little folks were deeply interested aud ready to answer questions aud to Dame ome giants in power in our land today. In the ivcuiug he ad dressed a nnion meeting of the young people in the Presbyterian church. Ou Monday he visited the school aud was granted permission to address the pupils of the eighth grade and of the high school. Snnday was quite a day for the presentation of tmjerance truths iu Grants Pass for besides Mr. Shattock, Dr. Tuffs, president of the Anti Saloon League for Oregon, and Dr. Van Pelt, state attorney for the same, were here and addressed andiinccs in the churches morning and evening besides holding a meeting in the after-no-, n. In the Pacific Christian Advocate of December 13 we And the following concerning Dr. Van Pelt: "The Rev. Dr. Van Pelt, of the Cin cinnati Conference, has been selected as the attorney of the Auti-Salocn League of the State of Oregon. Dr. Van Pelt was a lawyer before he be came a milliliter. As a pustor and preacher he attained a desirable re cord and eminent success in his Con ference, fie is a man of finest char acter, pleasing address and very super ior ability. He is coming to Oregou to take the place of so efllccnt a man as Mr. McAllister, and will doubtless give satisfaction to all who are inter ested in the suppression of the liquor traffic in Oregon and the Northwest. Graves who was to have been hero and delivered two lectures some time ago, but was detained in Aihland by serious illness, ci-me in ou the Monday evening train and stayed until Tuesday evening with the president, Mrs. Calvert.
