U. attended the state convention at The Dalles, October 3-7 inclusive. The journey was so do lightfol and the meetings so helpful and inspiring we want to give the members and friends who did not at tend a flight glimpse of the transac tions of the 23d annual gathering of the Womeos Christian Temperance Union of the state of Oregon. About noon of the Sd of October, we arrived at the grand old city of the hills overlooking the bine waters of tlie Colombia and were met by a committee from The Dalles Union, who escorted ns about 25 or 30 in number to the Obarr hotel for din ner, after which we were conducted to the beantilnl up-to-date M. E. church where Hey. A. A. Luce, suc cessor to Hev. George Iiootb, de ceased, is pastor. At 2 p. m. an executive session was held the board including general o Ul cers, couuty presidents and state su perintendents. The evening of the 8d was welcome night and, quoting from The Dalles Daily Chronicle, "In the chair was Mrs. Locia Faxon Additou, than whom none better could have been chosen as state president for she is full of energy and such enthusiasm as will keep things moving and allow no meeting to lag. Heart and sonl in tlie work she is truly the right p.-rsou for the important office she holds The meeting opened with devotional muiic conducted by Elder F. I. Cook, Christian church. Welcome addresses by several, including Hev, A. A. Lnce for the churches, Mavor Jas. L. Kelly for tho city, uud Mrs D. L. Cooper for The Dalles Union Mayor Kelly was represented by Hev waltou Hkipworth, as lie had to be present at a meeting of the council As a preface he said he was proud of the mayor, as a man of sturdy churac tor and heartily in sympathy with the best interests of the city. When he referred to his having cast his vote for closing saloons on Sunday thn as settiou was met with a round of tip plause. He then read the welcome of the mayor wishing us unbounded sue oess mid hoping that our visit to their city would bo beneficial assuring ns that whatever was done for the up lifting or the city wonld meet bis ap proval and have bis support. Rev A. A. Luce said iu closing, he hoped to nvo to see the death of two kings King Alcohol and MornioulBin. Mrs Cooper iu a short but convincing ad dress assured all the visiting workers of the hearty greeting of tlie local uuion. More delegates arrived In the even nig making ho or more in attendance.
