The Grants Pasi mineral exhibit
has lately received an ore specimen
which Is one of the most strikingly
beautiful in the whole collection. It
comes from Douglas county. 15 miles

property owned by J. M. Thompson.
The specimen is in a large proportion

and its vivid celoring of green and
bronze makes it exceedingly attrac
tive in appearance. Besides copper

Nominations for stats and county
oflioes in Oregon next April, in the
republican and the democratic parties,
will be made iu the manner followed
lust Slay iu the Portland oity prima
ries. The nominating primaries will
be held 45 days before the general
election, which will come ou the first
Monday in Jane.' All nominations
will be made by the direct primary
method, including those for governor,
the legislature and other offices
in tli, state, and for county o flics
throughout Oregon. The nominating
election will be the flint general test
of the direct primary law.
Candidates for a given nomination
will have their names placed on the
primary ballot, ou petition of at least
2 per cent of their respective party
vote last cast for Representative iu
Congress in their electoral district,
and the one who shall receive
the highest number of votes in the
primary will be the nominee of this
party for the office, and will be voted
ou in the nsnal manner iu the June
election.
The unrulier of signatures required
on a republican primaiy petition for a
state nomination will ho loot), the
maximum required by law; on a
democratic petition, b'.'O. Candidates
for republican nomination iu the
First Congressional District must
each secure 479 signatures and in
the Second District 51.1. Candidates
for tlie democratic nomination must
each obtain S4;i signatures iu the First
District, und 25o iu the Second.
These numbers aro based ou the vote
of each party a year ago for represen
tative in congress. The vets of each
party at that time by counties and
the number of signers required for
primary petitions for state mid
county and congressional nominations
