McAdie, of the San Francisco wtather bureau, the dis pute over which la the highest moun tain in the United States has been settled. It lias been a question whether Mount Rainier, iu Washing ton, or Mount Whitney. In California, Is the higher. Mr. McAdie and other scientists have just returned from Mount Rainier, collected much valuable data on scieutitio subjects that have long b.ien in dispute. Barometers used in measuring the mountain are the same as those used in measuring Mount Whitney, so thero can bo uo doubt that tho com parisons in heights are correct. Eight baromolrical readings taken on Mount Whitney two years ago register 1 7. ;UCK indies; four readings taken at the top of Mount Rainier lust Week register 17.fi:i3 or 17.17l. Which of tho two readings are exactly correct must be determined after correction- are made for gravity, water, vapor, etc. Mr. McAdie praised the work of the lato Profissor McClure, of Eugene, when talking of previous mercurial barometer measurements on Mount Rainier. Professor McCMurii was the first man to take a scientific measure ment of the mountain, and his read ings do not differ to a great exten t from those of Mr. McAdie and Pro feasor Le Conte, Professor McClure lost his life on Mount Rainier in li'.i? while looking for a safe passageway for companions and although his lit dy was never recovered, his leadings worn preserved. Professor McCliire's barometrical notes give the height of Mount Rainier as ll.TiH'." feet, his barometer registering 1 7. 7H inches Another measurement of the innuu lain, maow ny a geological survey gives the height as I -1,8 IS feet Measurements were also made of Pinnacle Rock, on Mount Raiuiir, and it was found that its height wils greatly overestimated. Mr. McAdie gives the height of Pinnacle Rock us ;MH) feet, instead ol lltHK) feet, as has been claimed. ( Irogon inn.
