PIONEER LIFE ON THE ALTHOUSE A Miner Geta Fast in a Chimney While Seeking av. Drink. My father moved with bis family to Illinoia valley, when I was a boy. Wo lived on what was known aa the Old Pixlcy ranch, and here I pasaed the happiest dayi of my life. I work ed with Reach, Platter and Leonard nearly five years. Many of the old residents of Josephine county still remember tboae old boys. They were an enterprising lot of fellows, and I have many pleasant memories of the davH I pasaed with them in those days. I knew many people in Jose phine county but I left that comity 2! years ago and until recently, have heard nothing from the old neighbor hood and my old frienda on Althouae. I have a cousin, Mra. Viola Kilter man, who reaides on Sucker creek near Holland. Mrs. Kitterman ia an intelligent woman, and an excellent correspondent. She has recently sent mo several lettera which are full of interest to me because they tell about many of my old friends, and the changes which have come since. Her last unto contained a uewicpuper clipping which contained a ahort sketch by Hilly McKay of Holland, which amused us not a little, aa we know thn old boya he mentioned. Ilia account of Jim Turuhull malting old Pat Ktxiuuy drunk aud tlion thrashing the old man, bring to onr memory another incident iu which old Pat Kooucy's apiictitti for whiskey got him into trouble. Hu came to ISrowntown ono day and got on a large drunk. As usual in the even ing be started for bis cabin, which una situated a lniln above town, oil No. 7 gulch. On the wuy to his homo he passed 1:11 Purkman'a plueo. Pill was not at home when rid Kooney arrived. He knew that Iltirkmau always kept whiskey in the house and he resolved to have Home of it. Ho tried the door but found it locked. Ho climbed onto the roof with the intention of going down the chimney, lie got into it all right lint bis foot slipped and down lie went feet first to thn 1 1 1 1 t. t of the chimney which was just large enough to admit his legs. The fall wedged him iu ao ti'bt that he could not get out, and there ho hung until liiirkmun cauio home late in the night, llurknian made a light and the first thing he saw was a pair of legs hanging in the fireplace, which upon Investigation he found to bo n part of old Pat Kooney, who waa ho badly done np that Hill had to help him home. Well, those were lively times on Altlionsr, when Uncle Miller run the saloon und hotel and Putn Orngau and Hill Kvnna kept the two stores.
