Mrs. Anna Newell, state evangelist for the W. O. T. U., was also present and spoke briefly. The reports of the superintendents of the different departments showing much work undertaken and the large num ber of new names added at each meet ing indicate the growing interest in this work among tbe yonng people of Grants Pass. Mrs. Lncia Faxon Additon, state president, will meet them at Medford and take charge of the conference. Delegates are expected, from all parts of Southern Oregon. It will be one of the great events of the year. Only two other places will be honored in the State by visits from these distiu gnished workers, Portland May 31 aud La Grande, May 26th. Mrs. Anna P. Hammond, Corresponding Secretary, Medford, Ore. W. C. T. V. Gathering. The W. O. T. U. of this city on Wednesday closed a most successful Institute, under the leadership of their state president, Mrs. L. H. F Additon. At 9:80 a. m. the meeting opened at the Newman M. E. church, witn devotional exercises led by Rev, D. T. Summerville. The local presi dent, Mrs. E. A. Wade, introduced the state president in a few well chosen words, who' proceeded to or gnnize the institute, potting on com mlttees and other routine work. A paper ou "Our Tools, and How to Uso Theni," was read by the state evaugolist. The paper brought out the power of printer's ink in reform work. The Union Signal, the national organ, and the White Ribbon Reviow, the statu organ, were discuss ed aud everyone was urged to take theso paiiers. A paier read by Mrs. H. L Calvert, topio "Ou Trial for His Life," was a masterly array of facts against the cigarette. The state law was discuss ed and the opinion prevailed that it should be euforced. A par'iamcntary and business drills followed, given by the state president, winch was very profitable aud luterestlug. Mrs. C. V. Henkle read a panel on "Divert ing the Stream" which brought out the discussion of as to what extent, if any, the fnuds of the society should be expeuded ou other hues than their own plan of work, aud it was clearly brought out that no society was more thoroughly or systematically organ i.ed, for active, agresslve uud pro grussive work. A most interesting paper on "How to Win a No License Victory, "aud one ou "Flower Mission Work, " wore rend and botli were full of instructive thought. 1 The noontide service was npliftiug and interesting. The uoon hour was given over to social intercourse and delightful lunch. Afternoon session was opened by Mrs. J. B. Travis. Her lesson being from the 16th Chapter of John. Hi expnsitiou was most uplifting. Mrs Calvert, presided at the organ. paper on "The Rehitlou of Cruelty to Food Supplies," was read by Mrs. Bntmau. It was attentively listened to, and the discussion following brought out tho relation of food to temperance. The pure food law was briefly commented ou hy the state president, it is evident that these workers have laid the axe of reform at the root ot the tree of evil. O. T. U. hai been and is doing stalwart pioneer service to humanity in the uplift of mankind, the protection of childhood, the en franchisement of women and the re moval of stumbling blocks ont of tin way of struggling mankind. At the conclusion some names were given in for membership in the social W. C. T.
