While the hmjority of mines tlioi far developed are confined to the Waldo district, a strip 60 miles in length and iu the more southern pari of the county, several good ledges are being developed on an extension of the same belt farther north. These are on Slate Creek and Galii e Creek, and good claims are found as far north as Riddle, Douglas county. There are eight or nine well de veloped copper mines in the Waldo district. The largest and best do ve loped of these are owned by the Waldo Bninlting & Mining Company. These proiMjrtics are ready to Ivgin work at auy time, but on aoccnnt of mountain country that lio between them and Grants Pass, the nearest railroad point, they are practically idle and are "resting on thuir oais," so to speak. However, a company known as tho California & Oregon Coast Railroad incorporation, and composed of some of the same people as are Interested in the mines of the Waldo Hinelting & Mining Compuuy, lias been organized and propone, to build a railroad fioni Grants Pass to Eureka, Cat. The survey lias been completed and a right of wny secured. The road will pass within five, miles of the Waldo mines, and tho latter will bo reached by a spur from the main line, The Waldo Smelting & Mining Coniniiy has expended about tfiO.OOO in the development and equip ment of their mines. . mi lSri URIDGT! ACHOS3 ROGEE Tho lodges of the Southern Oregon copper belt compare fuvonibly with the best ooppur mines iu the world. They range in width from three, to 160 feut. Values are carried Iu both gold and copier on an average of from H to $o0 iu the two metals. Just this past August tho Takilma Smelting Company completed a 100 ton smelting plant at Takilma for tho Waldo ooppur mines and the blowing iu of this plant marked nu important cjKich iu the history of Southern Oregon's mining Industry. Tho furnaoo is of the standard water Jacket tyjie, dimensions 4()x'.iJ inches at the tuyeres, representing a maxi mum capacity of 200 tons of mo per day of 21 hours, but by hanking the fires, as at present, it van be made to handle as little as tuny be desired. That It can easily do what is expected of.lt is indicated from the fact that at the very commencement of finer- tlons it handled 13 one ton charges per hour, tho product being a mat to containing about 40 sr cent copper, besides gold and silver values which aro very satisfactory. The furnace was built by the Holt- hoff Maohlnery Company of Cud ahy, 'Wiscotinlu, ninl its erection was snporiuttiudod by Mr. A. I. (Joodtill, au eiHrioncod smelter man, now manager of the big smelt ing plant of the I.o Hoi Company at Northport, Washington. Tho present manager of the sine Iter is Mr. K. W. An elevator from tho ground floor to the charge floor is operated by steam presscre. The plant is lighted by electricity, furnished by a small dy namo In the engine room. A noteworthy feature of the smelter is a hrick flue to conduct away the fumes, and incidentally collect the flue dost and other fines. It is 1H6 fuet long connected with the furnace by an inverted elbow, or "goose nock," which conveys tho smoke to a vortical height of b8 feet, where the fumes are received into a boiler Iron stuck fonr and one-half feet In diam eter and W feet high. The brick and lime for the entire plant was inanu filtered ou the ground. Chaa Tutt is manager of the Takilma Smelting Company and closely associated witli him are K. K. Hal belt, J. A. Hull and other prominent mining men. The IjHioeii of iironze mine, owned by Mr. Tutt, has furnished most of the ore that is being smelted at pres ent. Tho ore is a chalcopyrite carry ing gold and silver values, as well as copiMT The oro deposit or vein is from 1!) to 20 feet wide on a contact of serpentine and diorlto. On the south end of the claim a shoot of ore 20 feet wldo Is developed to a depth of f0 feet. On the north end the velo is cut In two places and has an aver age width of 28 feet. A 000-foot cross cat tunnel is being driven, which is now about half finished, and will cut tho vein at a depth of 287 fnct. the Cowboy mine, owned by the . ilfc-t..- KIVEK AT GRANTS PASS. Waldn Smelting and Mining Coiiiisiny, Is nlso furnishing ore for tho smel ter. This orn carries good values and contains from 10 to 12 per cent mag nesia, a factor which nnders the use of additional limn unnecessary In the smelting charge. The ore from these two mines, mixed, makes one of the easiest ores to smelt that any district cnu produce, ns tho oro from the Qnoen of Rromso carries the uecessary sihei, in mill i t ion to a magnetic iron ore which also carries gold and silver values; hence the ores of this district are practically neutral in character. The fuel nsed is coke, of which it requires about 160 jwrnids to the ton charge. The Cowboy claim has bteu devel oped to a depth of about 110 feet. A tunnel already 400 feet long is being run, which will open up tho oro body 210 feet deep Another promising group is tho Mabel anil Copper King claims, which havo boon developed by shaft to a depth of 87 feet, showing a 6 foot vein of good values. On tho L.vttlo claim, one of the Waldo Smelting and Mining Compa ny's grotip.a tunnel was driven which developed tho vein 1 (HI feet iu depth, -bowing an ore body 27 f.et wldo by HO feot long. A tunnel is also being driven here, w hich is now in 600 feet, and designed to encounter the vein at about 160 feet greater depth than the upKir works. A 2000-foot gravity tram will be built to deliver tho ore from this lower tunnel to a point near the smelter. ..-vivl'; ' ' 'j - ' is;.ra iii i.'iiVAii OHCMAIU) HVKXE.
