Marshal Stevens and Mr. Hughes of Marysville, Cai., went to Roseburg Monday 011 track of an emlmzicr who was snppoxed to have been hero re cently. Tho man they were in search of was a former cashi r of the State Hunk of Mapletnn, Minn., and had embezzled funds to the amount of 17,000 Mr. Hughes, an official of Mapletou had wired bis brother at Marysville to have the man arrested at Grants Pass The Marysville Hnghta had known the embezzler foi years and was provided with a photo graph of the man. At Kow burg they found a man who answered . the de scription in every detail, even to the weight which was considerable over 200 pounds. The arrest was made and tho mau taken bcf,,re a justice of the is-aeo. but the uccused proved his identity by a Roaehurg citizen. On being shown the photograph and des cription, ho had tn adimt that the officials were justified in arresting him. The man proved to be N. L. Griswold of Washington, I) C, and holding a government position. He v-aa known by one man only in Roae burg and but for this acquaintance, hu would have liocn placed in a very uwkward position. The high water of last week occa sioned lively times for awhilo ut the Rocky Gulch hydraulic mine of the Galico district. This year, under the diiectiou of suairintciideiit Harry I aw it. a low bank next the river is being worked with good results. The ledge located on th eaat side of Ml. llahlv and only four miles fronitirints I'ass, a short distance up the gulch from the wagon mail at tint old Hamlin place. In the early daya of mining in South em 1 ri gnu, a boulder of quart weighing considerably more than ton was found 011 the west shqw Haldv. This boulder was winked u by baud and paid big wages even for those dnva. Some 10 yeara ago, Mans Held found a big lanihh r of the aamc apottetl quart, on the east sltqa. bt low tviiere the present locations have been made, which carried values to the amount of $;.'tiMi the ton.
