Peculiar Accident to Chat. Ed

Chas. Edwards is suffering from au
accident by which Ins arm was
broken on Monday at Williams Bros.
factory where he is an employe. He
was attempting to put on a belt and
did not signal the engineer to slack
the englno for the purse, as is the
custom. Tho cud of the belt lacing
caught in a rough place iu the pulley
and the belt was wrapped with
lightning spied around the pulley
and shuft. Tha flying end of the lsilt
struck Edwards a violent op blow on
the under side of the fore arm, break
ing both bones. The shaft was re
volving at the raie of 2100 revolutions
to the minuto and the pulley is 28
inches in diamcte. It w is an eight
Inch belt and double, aud the blow
struck wus a tremendous one.

Tha recent storm, while it has
features that are not altogether pleas
ant to pedestrians and those who are
obliged to be iu
the open air, is one
of the best for the placer milling
enterprise that has occurred for a long
time. It has been snowing intermit
tently for several days and whilo in
the lower valleys it lias been me. ting
as it fell, io the mountains it has
been piling up probably to a depth of
several feet, making a reserie water
kupply on which the creeks nnd
gulches may draw for many weeks to
come. All tho smaller streams and
gulches are now running full of
water from tho melting snow and tho
r-solt is an awakening of activity in
the placer mines, many of which had
recently beeu compelled partially to
suspend operations as all but the
best watur right were romilug some
what short. It the present Worm is
followed rip by another fqually as
good a little later iu the season, it will
M sufficient to make this a first class
placer year and the present somewhat
uncomfortable wetness is helping to
well tho clean np of next spring.

"gulch diggings" and little sluice
hni ventures whose aggregate is as
tonishiiigly largo and helps in no
small measure to swell the gold out
put of Southern Oregon. Soiuo of

jury trill of the term. Tho phintiff

the Dalles, while the defendant was
represented by W. D. Fentou and 15.
A. Loiter, of Portland. The case be
gan on Thursday and the greater por
tion of three days was taken up by
the trial. The following jury was

to show that the accident was caused
by Dunham's own carelessness. The
arguments by Feuton and Biniutt
were masterpieces, of legal oratory.
Tho jury's verdict awarded damages
to Dunham in the sum of 12.000 and
the following special findings were

on the charge cf maliciously an
wantonly wounding and injuring au
animal, the :,iperty of another.

ing a cow, the property of John Knu
r.iu on October 2, P.m.'l. Bail was fixed

day, ho was given until Monday to

The greater jiortion of Monday was
taken up by the Grove divorce case,

judgment by default was entered and

Narrow Escape.

Guy Jeter, the delivery boy for the
New Meat Market, is suffering from
an exciting accident which occurred
on Monday and which might easily
have resulted fatally. With his horse
and delivery cart he was jogging np
Sixth street and just in front of the
office in the Opo'-a house
block, he was ran into by a runaway
team and wagon. The runaways

cart with a terrific impact, turning it

horse and all for some distace up the

stemied upon by the horse aud run
over by the cart, and when the mix-op

he was found to be only severely

After the team had passed, the cart
rinhted and the horse started on up
tho street after the runaway. He
turned east on E street aud went
around the block, coming back into
Sixth street at the Sugar Pine store.
He turned down Sixth street, took b
