Southern Oregon can no more help developing than a healthy child can keep from growing. The re sources of this district are such that they can not bo hidden or ignored and some day they will receive a wider recognition than we nall.e. lint Judicious advertising will hasten the day when our section will be dcvolocd according to its worth. The wings of Southern Oregon may by strength ened and her flight greatly decelerat ed. The proHised exhlhil to he installed iu the Union depot in Portland should be furthered mid supKirted by the citizens of Josephine county, that a display creditable to us anil our re sources may Ihi made. Editor Coarier : As an erroneous impression seems to have gone abroad concerning the Kogue river bridge, I would like to correct it, by your kind permission. It wax stated iu the Oregonian that a "temporary "structure bad been built, which would be replaced by a perma nent one later ou, and thru the Ob server gis s one better by publi-hing the statement that long timbers had ls-eii borrowed from the S. P. Ry. and the "citizens" were building a tomjsjr ary bridge w hich would do for the pres ent, and the timbers were to be returned to the railroad after a while, when the real thing is built, and the last issue of the Courier also said "tem porary." Now, I want to state as a matter of justice to our county authorities that they made out the bill and ordered the material of the liooth-Kelly to., Is fore they were obtainable as their mills wi re not in prosr condition to turn out the order on account of the recent Hoods and it was also uuexi ctedly delayed by tho railroad Company, mid did not laud here until the day wo began work ou the bridge and I will say further, that there is nothing of a teinjsirary nature about that bridge. The timbers were the heaviest anil best obtainable and it lias been built to stay and in the strongest manner possible, for we drove piles clear down to bedrock to carry the bent that supisirts the new span and also for the Is'iit that bad supported the old approach which had rested on sand and had been undermined and had fallen down and made a clear sjiaii of (III f. et where it had bu n but it) before, and all this was done nl" eight days, notwithstanding the state ment of the Observer that it would take six weeks, and this new span would carry any ordinary freight train, and every joint in it has tim e coats of carboliiieum to preserve it from rusting. Now, while we were toiling on that bridge, exposed to the driving rain and freezing weather we used to gaz. up Sixth street with longing eyes ex- Is i ting every minute that our " bus iness' men would loom up en the hori zoij, all eager to the help us w ith tin bridge. P.ut alas for human hopes, for none came, and "of all sad words of tongue or i'ii, the saddest are the-. it might have been! and If our county cousins had waited for them to build that bridge, they would now be singing, " Plungid inn gulf of dark despair, we trembling sinners lie.
