RURAL MAIL DELIVERY
Uncle Sam Is Not Kind to Little
Josephine.
Editor of Courier:
Coming here from a country, every
foot of which is 'covered with rural
delivery, I cauuot understand why they
do not have it hero. Surely, this part
of the country is as much entitled to
Undo Sam's favors as any other part
of his domain. You cauuot know
what the coming of the mail man
means to tlio rciuoto farmer's family,
besides it is an educator. Statistics
show how many more papers are taken
where there is free delivery. Uuclo Sam
requires timo in tlio delivering over
tlio route, usually about 25 miles
which means hotter roads. Oregon
may bo ahead on scenery, climate and
fruit, but sho is away back in tho
"Dark uges"iu country road building.
California sets a good example. In
taking a trip one does nut have to ask
where tho California improved roads
begin and tlio Oregon bad ones are
left behind. I read iu a Portland pa
per of twenty new rural routes to be
started but none in Josephiuo county.

RECENT ENTERTAINMENTS
The Past Week's H&ppenlngs In
the "Show" Line
"Sandy Bottom, " presented nt tho
era house ou Thursday evening,
proved a very pleasing play. It is full
of interest, ami was well played
throughout. Tho company is well bal
anced, all the members sustaining
their parts creditably. Tho best fea
ture was the "Sandy Bottom" quar
tet which was extremely popular Willi
the audience.
The "Dusky Americans" in "Belle
of Georgia" at the oiicra house Mon
day evening tlid not give an extremely
higu class performance. It was an old
fa Moied "nigger show," bereft of
most of the entertaining features.
The one bright spot iu tho iicrform
lin n was the work of Carter Bros.,
acrobats ami contortionists. This was
good, ami if all the rest hail been cut
out the audience would have been bet.
tt r satislied.
The liipiid air demonstration given
at the oi ra house Tueathiy evening
by Professor Patty, was cum of the
lust i nt erta in ing events that has
. vt r been given In re. Apart from its
an. using and startling features, it
was of ki t n scii otitic: interest. A
lurge crowd attended and every ex
periment was watched with the most
anient interest. It was wonderful
and some of the effects seemed almost
miraculous.

OUR
Red - Tag' - Sale
STILL ON.
Its a Winner!
Our RED' TAG SALE started off Monday, Jan. 5th,
with a very lively trade and the buying ever since has been
active and without abatement. Many people who came
"just to see what we had," and others, who "were afraid it
was a fake sale," looked at the goods, bought them and
left the store fully satis6ed that we arc doing just what we
advertise to do. Some who came to buy only an overcoat
bought a suit also, because, as they said, it was too good a
bargaiu to let slip;
WE EMPHASIZE
' We do not expect to make any profit on this
sale. Our sole object is to TURN THE
STOCK INTO CASH. WE WANT THE
MONEY!
We have just received a line of Oregon Cassimere Suits
and in order to further stimulate the RED TAG SALE we
have RED TAGGED 'em also.
