SOME ARGUMENTS. BY SENATOR EARLE OF MICHIGAN. Wfcr Better niahtrar. Arc Want. mat Why They Arc Bnrleltl-Wkll tha rrodocera Sava by llAallns Over God Haada, Wbjr are better roads wanted and why are better roads beneficial to tbe owners of farms, of mines, of manu facturing establishments or otlier pro ducers of materia) to lie transported? That as much as possible the coot of transportation may be eliminated, said Senator Earle of Michigan In a speech before a good roads convention. The cost of transportation does not en ha nee tbe value of any kind of product There Is a market everywhere for ev ery kind of product, where the price Is set, and wbut tho producer lefts for Ills product Is the price set at this oittunil market less the cost of traiiHiortutlon from the producing point to the market setting point. So the farm owners, the mine owners and the owners of factories In Michi gan are or onght to be Interested In anything that will have a tendency to eliminate any portion of the cost of production, and the cost of transport!! tlon of a product to Its natural market is a part of the cost of production as much as are the wages paid to the la borer. If the producers were as eco nomical with King Mud as they are with King I-nbor, wo would liuve bet ter roads, and much of tho cost of transportation would be eliminated, and a portion of this saving might well be handed to King Labor. It Is a fuel that the carriers are transporting wheat from Nebraska to Liverpool for less money per bushel than It costs a farm cr to haul It over a common dirt road ten miles to market. If It costs 2 to draw one ton to mar ket over a bad road and only $2 to draw two tons over that same road when that road has benn made better, then the better road Is the machine to obtain and use that a portion of tho cost of transportation may be olhnl nnted, provided t tint the machine (the better road) and Its repairs do not cost more than can be eliminated by Its nse for the cost of transportation. If $'-' per ton Is fair average of what Is 1 saved by the use of a good road over the use of a bad road, It Is only neces sary to find out how many tons are hauled over any rood a year to know whether that road can be Improved to a prollt or not To explain, If a given IIAULINIJ BAY IN NOIIMaNUY, FIUNI'S. This loud welKlm upward of four tuns road cost 110,000 to build, there must bo a travel of at least l.lKJO loads a year over that road at a saving of $: load. Of course, It does not cost $2 to haul ono ton one mile, but the nvcrage dis tance that farm produco Is hauled Is uvea miles, and a fanner will not go to towu twice lu ono duy seveu miles way, over a bad road, and going to town will about uso up the day, so tlmt It has cost to haul one ton to market whatever one man and ono team for one day are worth, or about 2.oO. If tbe mad was a Hist class macadam road, three tons or more at a load would be hauled and two trips would tie made, thus delivering at the Hint Ion or innrLet live tons more u day than could he with a laid road. saving $t2.IH), a portion of which the producer can well afford to pay for a machine that helps to eliminate It. 1'otntocs yield about six tons to the acre, sugar beets about twelve. The grower can multiply the number of acres hy the number of tons and thru multiply the number of tons by '. mid ho will have the amount he can afTord to pay In taxes or subscription to luilld macadam road If seven miles from market-that Is, If he Is seven miles from mirkct and ha fifty acres of sugar beets, ho can afford to pny for a macadam rood $1,200, which Is 2 times ,tWO tons. Hut he won't have to pay anywhere near this sum, so he need not go Into hysterics at tho as sertlon. You cannot save the cost of excessive trnnsiKirtiitlon over a bad road more than It costs over a good road until you havo tho good road to savo It for you; then you can save, and what yon save, or some portion of It, you can pay toward tho retiring of short term Isinds that you bought the road with, the wi mo as you did to retire the notes that you gave for the binder, nnd there! Is no more reason to tie afraid of I bond than there Is to bo afraid of a uoto. Neither can bo afforded for lux urlcs, but either can bo afforded for machines which wllj save more thnr tney otstt, and It Is only the timid and foolish that will continue to cut their fraln with a cradle or haul their grain through mud to tho market If theti) li enough to cut or to haul to pay to got tho machine t cut or haul It with. NOT ITERKDITARY In the main, consumption is not hereditary ; it is infec tious. Low vital force is hereditary; which gives consumption its chance. An infection starts it. Botween the two, the crop is a big one: about one-sixth of the human race. We suppose it needn't be more than 5 per cent, if people would take fair care and Scott's emulsion of cod-liver oil. It is different with the average man or woman. They at tempt constantly to run by the dan ger signsls of Nature snd that attempt costs thousands of lives every year. He lias to take account of that open spigot with its steady leakage aud certain loss. The man who would ignorantly permit this waste and loss would be simply put down as heedless and careless. But the man who would knowingly permit it, who would continue his efforts to fill the cask regardless of the palpable waste and loss would be considered little better than a madman, aud as a merchant on the highway to ruin. Every time man or woman puts food into a diseased stomach there is a repetition of the folly of the mer chant in his effort to fill his leaking cask. We eat to live. Physical life is sustained by food and by food alone. But in order to sustain life the food eaten must be digested and its nutrition extracted and assimilated. So that it is not by the food eaten that we must reckon sustenance, but by only so much of it as is properly digested: When there is disease of the stomach and other organs of digestion and nutrition there is failure in the digestive processes and a con sequent loss of nutrition. That is what makes dyspepsia dan gerous. We think of it as affecting the stomach only. But it affects the whole body and every organ of the body which depends for life and strength upon the nutrition derived from food. The proof of this loss of nutrition when the stomach is diseased, is that it is generally accompanied by loss of weight. It naturally would be. If life is sustained by the nutrition derived from food, and lost and wasted, there fk-sh and loss of weight. And as nutrition is the source of physical strength, when there is loss of nutrition there is a loss of the strength contained in that nutrition. If you are weak, run-down and losing flesh, the most probable cause of your condition is disease of the stom ach and digestive and nutritive tract. Probably this cause of disease has not occurred to you. You have o?--, had heart "trouble," liver "trouble," kidney "trouble,'1 as a consequence of diseased stomach and innutrition and have "doctored" for these organs, naturally with very little success, because the loss of nutrition which is a loss of strength is The simple, sensible thing to do is to stop that leak and loss of nutrition, then the logical result should be the regaining of lost flesh and lost strength. This is just the result that follows the uce of Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery. It cures diseases of the stomach and other organs of digestion and nutrition, stops the leak and loss of nutrition and builds tip the body with sound flesh and strong muscle. The scales prove it. There's no guess-work iibout such cures. F you are weak, run-down, and losing flesh, nervous, irritable, and generally miserable, you can make yourself healthy and strong again by using " Goldeu Med.eal Dis covery " to stop the loss of nutrition which is a lossWjf physical susteuance and physical strength. "I was, weak, nervous snd dizzy, with a fainting sensatio'n when walking,' writes Jesse Childress, Esq., of Samuel, Sullivan Co., Teim. "Could not walk any distance;' always felt bad after eating; felt u though something was sticking iu my throat, always unwasincss in stomach. Was taken down in January, 1898. Doctored with two or three physicians, but they did not relieve me any. I grew worse and used everything I could think of; was nearly ready to give up and then some one told me that Dr. Pierce's medicine was good, so I began taking his 'Golden Medical Discovery.' I have taken seven bottles of that now and am as stout as ever and am enjoy.ng health, as much as ever before. I worked all summer aud this winter as much' as anyone. My case was nervous dyspepsia and liver disease of which jour medicine has cured me. In September, 1898, my weight was about ninety-five founds, now it is one hun dred and niuety-five. Please accept my sincere thanks." " I wist to say to the world that Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical aiseovfry has proved a great blessing to me," writes Mrs. Ellen E. Bacon, of Shutesbury, franklin Co., Mass. ''Prior to September, 1897, I had doctored for my stomach trouble, for several years, going throuidi a course if treatment without any real benefit. In September, 1896, I had very sickspe'ls and grew worse; could eat but little. I commenced in SeptemW 1897, lo take I)r Pierce's tucdi cine, and 111 a short time I could eat and work. I have gained twenty pounds in two months." toil's It , sW igU NOTICK.
