The Ottoman empire, ones the moat
powerful in tie world, has sunk io low
that any of the powers may tweak its
national nose with impunity. All that
is necessary to make Turkey accede to a
command is to send a wsrablp. A blufl
l sufficient and almost invariably neces
sary. Tbs coat of collecting indemnity
from Turkey depends now on the price
of coal. The wrangle between France
and Turkey over a question of indemnity

the port of Byuirna. The matter is the
outcome of a aeries of promises msde
and broken by ths Sultan, nntll tbe

A Dew canal treaty is to be made and
Lord Pauncefute has formally announced
to Secretary If ay his readiness to begin
work on it. The canal affair has been
a juggled that tbs people of the United
States have temporarily lost Interest In
it and are skeptical in regard to the
canal's ever being constructed. Tbs
need for tbe canal is so constant and
pressing that the matter can not long
remain In tbe back ground, but must
necessarily keep near tbe front in tbe
publlo interest. Tbe Clayton-Balwer
treaty was a sad error as it gave Ureal
Britain a voice In the matter which is
embarrassing to present operations, but
tbe treaty was mads and we cannot
honorably ignore It.
The question of advertising tbs re
sources and advantages of our section Is
one that should not be allowed to re

should such advertising be confined to
any one particular scheme ot method
and the proposed mining etbibit is one
way In which to effectually advertise.

thing they had themaelves seen. Its
advvrtiaing, though not so extensive,
would be of the auperOueal quality. The
proper way ia to have both exhibit and
