The Ashland saloon casus are set for
hearing in the supreme court on Nov. 4,
and the decision Is awaited with In
terest. The appeal was taken on the
grounds that there was not lulllclenl
authority In Ashland's charter to sup
port the ordinance under which the
convictions were made.
Arliona, New Mexico and Oklahoma
are seeking admission to statehood. In
polut of population, wealth and general
importance, they compare favorably
with some of the states which have been
admitted and, as there seems to be no
serious political reason against their ad
mission, It Is likely their claims will re
ceive favorable consideration.

A lease granting the free use of a lot
In the northeast corner of the railroad
park, for a mining exhibit, has been
received from the railroad company.
The company is taking an active
interest in the proposed exhibit, believ
ing that it would be of material aid in
the development of our county's resour
ces. In matters of this kind, the
iuterests of the railroad company and of
the people are identical. Increased
development means increased business
for the railroad and to build up the dis
tricts through which the lines run is, for
the company, the most far sighted and
soundest business policy. The Southern
Tactile is showing its readinees to help
in any war to develop southern Oregon
and it is to Its interests so to do.
Halloween pranks are growing stead
ily more and more into disfavor each
succeeding year. They are stale. They

and there are always soma that will in
dulge in them while a long suffering

An ordinance is under consideration
by the city council to prohibit the rid
ing of bicycles on sidewalks within the
city limits. The pause of this ordi
nance ran not fail to be a more or less
serious inconvenience to the mauy ho
use bicycles in the winter, when the
streets are wet and muddy. Kor this

On Friday evening a meeting was
held at the parlors of the First National
bank for the purpose of making a con
certed action toward the more extensive
advertisement of Josephine county's
many resources and advantages. The
meeting was attended by 15 or 10 of the
representative business men snd promi
nent citisens of Grants Pass. IJ. O.
Booth, president of the Mining snd
Commercial club, was called to the
chair and R. W. Clark was chosen
secretary. The object of the meeting
was stated by K. L. Coe. He strongly
advocated the establishment "' Per
manent mining exhibit in a suitable
building to be situated on the coiner
of the railroad park nearest the depot.
The railroad ollicia's had elTircd the
use of the ground rent free for the pur
pose and were taking an active- interest
in the proposed movement.
Judge Axtoll mado a lulling speech,
saying that the future of this county was
largely dependent on the mines. He
mentioned the fact that the assessment
rolls of the county showed an increiixn
of aliout IHO.OOO over last year, mostly
In mines and mining property.
The several ways ol advertising and
the different methods of placing money
to advantage In this lino were discussed
at some length. No definite action was
taken beyond the appointment of a
committee to investigate the boat means

allowed to glide around beneath the live

rocks in peace and safety, but some of
these days the local nimrods will put
"MajV'and "Snider" on his trail and
his career will end. "Msje" is a noble
bound,;but not a lesn hound. He It
big, wide chested and grand. He has
big, honest brown eyes, flowing esrs,
s nose that reaches into Ihe infinite be
yond and a voice like the trump of doom.
He it a veteran of the chase and has
been ho'jksd through and through Ins
vilals by a wounded buck, yst recover
ed. "Snider" is a reddish brown mon
grel. He is half hound, though he doesa'l
look It. His ears perk up at the bass
and his nose has an upward tilt. The
only striking thing about bis appearance
is the air of alert pugnacity which starts
out from every feature. Every on who
lookt in "Snider's" face knows that he
is game to theifinith, yet he is, vilhal, a
goad tempered dog, welt meaning and
orderly. By sheer merit, he has placed
himself In the lead among the "varmint"
dogs of hit district and the ownert ef
promising puptlike to have them hunt
with "Snider" for their education.
When "Maje" and "Snider" camp to
gether on that panther's trail, there will
be sport royal.

the sheriff prior to that date.
Taxes paid between the 15th and Slst,
both dates inclusive, will not be allowed
any rebate, but neither will any penalty
of interest be sddid thereto.
Taxes become' delinquent after the
first Monday in April and there will be
added immediately thereto a penalty of
ten per cent and also interest at the rate
of twelve per cent per annum in addi
tion to the penalty.
If one-half ol the taxes are paid on or
before the first Monday in April, then
the payment of the remainder may be
deferred up to the first Monday in Octo
ber; bnt if not then paid it shall become
delinquent and subject to a penalty of
too per cent and interest at the rate of
twelve per cent per annum from the
first Monday of the preceding April.
On all personal property taxes the
law compels the sheriff to make levy
aaal collect tha same after April 1st, ua
leee one-half thereof shall hare been
paid on or before the first Monday in
April.
The law compels the sheriff to sell alt
lands on which taxes have not been
paid and provide that tax sales shall
be made not later than March 1st ot the
year succeeding that in which the levy
shall hava been made.
Property will be sold to the persons
biddiag the lowest rate of iutereet, aad
certificates will be issued therefor, and
deeds given to the property three years
alter such sale, unless the property shall
hav been sooner redeemed.

The report Is current that Misses
Anna Caton and Mvrile Love had a
narrow escape from a panther at the
Jadie Hanna place near the Meadows,
In Jackson county.
The girls were engaged in washing
clotbos at the creek, a short distance
from the house, when one of them hap
pened to so a large panther ronched
in the brush within loa'r vardi of them.
The big beast was crouched close
upon tho ground, waving- hia lall to
and fro, his glaring eys fixed upon
the two girls, real to make the fatal
spring. Miss Caton, whose attention
was first attracted by the panther,
daahed an armful of dollies into the
lac of the panther and the two women
ran screaming to the house. The
panther, hafHaxl and taken unaware at
so unexpected a repulse, skulked away
into the woods.
At this same place, about a year ago,
two panthers attempted to carry off the
littl babe of Mrs. Louis Bollee, but
they were foiled in their attempt by the
mother of the child, sle driving away
the beast with a shotgun. The beasts
viden ly hav their lair somewhere in
tb canyons of tbs Meadows district.
