Our boys left here on the j early morning train of the 27th and are expected home on the 10.30 traiu this evening. It is doubtful, say the reports, if ft .nore desirable spot for a camp ground could have been selected any where, an,l everywhere and everything points to a most successful tour in the matter of instruction, in the duties of the Soldier both in point of drill and duties of earing for Pelf in camp. The camp is located in an opening surrounded by beautiful groves of fir trees. These trees furnish shelter lioin the sun and strong w inds, and there is no danger of the tents teing whipped to pieces or otherwise damaged. To the south of the camp are the kitchens and mess tents of the companies, these being in the shade of the tall fir trees. Companies A and C of Eugene, went to camp early Thursday morning. Companies B, E and 11 from Ashland, Koseburg and Grants Pass, and Compa nies G, F and 1 from Albany, 8alem and Woodburn, arrived from the south and north at 2:08 p. m. In order to save the men a great part of the march in the bot sun, the Southern Pacific Company stopped the trains at the crossing near the Blair farm, where the troops disombarked and bad only about a mile to inarch to camp. The regiment is under the command of Colonel Yoian and Lieutenant Colonel Poormau. The First ballation is com manded by Maj jr H 11. Lea no and the Second by Maj r J. L. May. The follovving, from tho Ashland Tidings reminds us forcibly of previous experiences of our own city in lint same regard : ''Benorts regarding the prevalence of simillpox in Ashland havo been circu ited over the valley, and in some cases at least, it is believed with malicious iuU nt, w ilh the view of keeping people auay from the city. AshUn.l people visiting the lower valley have been told that their city was alive with the disease, and the number of cases was estimated all the way from t) to f0. II. 8 tewart is in tow n town this week from Boland Creek where he has lately made another rich strike on the vein owned by himself and J. P. Ban Held, whose find of last year caused something of a sensation in prospecting circles. He has some samples of the ore, which are beautiful specimens, be ing plentifully besprinkled with par ticles of gold. They have sunk on the vein some 20 feet in depth, and the vein at that distance from the surface pre sents a much more permanent appear ance while the high grade character of the ore continues. The vein is about 14 inches between walls and parallel with it, on one- side, runs a vein of porphyry about three feet wide. At the depth attained, this porphyry is about half ipiarta, none of which appeared at the surface, and the indica tions are all to the elfect that it w ill all form a solid ore body deeper down, in which case the mine will be one of the most valuable in southern Oregon. The vein lies in a huge mineralized dyke, which itself carries siilphuiets in ipiantity, whoso values havo not yet been tested.
