Last week of the legislature and no

Inman, 2fi.
The barberl' Sunday closing law ent
into effect last week and it ia now un
lawful for Ihe harbors to keep their
atiopa open on that day. The law was
pasted on account of an urgent senti
ment in that direction on the part o! a
great niajorily of the barbers of the
tale.
The anuiveisary of YVaaltintoii'e birth
day ttiould never go by without con
sideration of liliu and the qualities
which have given bim everlasting honor
and the regard of hit countrymen, al
most without exception. Aaron llurr
was perhaps a more brilliant man than
Washington, but he lacked the wisdom
to turn hit ability in a direction lo make
bim truly great. It Is a fact lo be up
predated more than it is that Washing
ton was a man, who, after baying the
ability to place himself at the highest
position that the country could give, had
still the honesty and high principle to
direct bis efforts alu.ost wholly toward
the welfare of his people. If Washing
ton and a few of his advisors had been
schemers or gra'ters, wholly intent on
feathering their own nests, our ship of
stale would have been wrecked before it
was fairly launched. Ihat our govern
ment was started 00 lines and princi
ples, tlis pursuance of which has made
It one among the greatest ou eailb, is
due very greatly to the broad minded
wisdom, far superior to partisanship,
which actuated the niluds of Washing
ton and those who assisted and sup
ported him.
No person has ever gained national
fame in a more unique way than has
Mrs. Carrie Nation, the Joint wrecker.
It seems a stiange thing that a person
could go about smashing furniture and
destroying property, and still be
Immune from the law, but such
Is the case. The reason ia that
the taloont she smashes are them
selves contrary to law and have no legal
right to existence, therefore Mrs. Nation
violates no law when she demolishes
them. Strange though it may seem, her
career of violence hat bad good reaulte.
It bat awakened public sentiment to the
scandalousness of allowing the illegal
traffic to continue and In some towns a
determined movement has been made
to close up the Joints. Kven among the
saloon men themselves, Mrs. Nation
seems accorded certain degree i f
tolerance and rescrt because they
realise Unit the acta from principle and
not from personal animosity. Her
method is practicable only under Ihe
peculiar conditions of Kansas, where
illegality nourishes under laxity of law
Where saloons are legalized, as in niost
state, Carrie's ra ejr would have been
cut short and rightly enough. But
while her course has seemed violent ami
reckless, the seems to have a very long
headed idea as to Iter legal privileges
and all that the saloou men seem to trv
to do is to save as much furniture as
possible and to yearn earnestly for her
departure.

Thompiun for Mayor of Chicago.
William il.ile Thompson of Chicago,
who, as a member of the Old Channel
mining company, ia quite extensively
interested in Josephine couuty mines
and who spent some time here last year
looking after the interests of hit
property, is now prominently mentioned
as a probable candidate for mayor of
Chicago. The Times Herald of January
.'tOrayt: "William Hale Thompson was
presented with a full-fledged boom for
the Republican mayoralty nomination
yesterday, Ilia friends are working for
him tooth and nail, and they are legion.
Whitt is of greater importance it the fact
many of the party iiiiitiagers take kindly
to Lit candidacy. They assert the
popular young South Side aldi-ruian
would run Mayor Harrison a harder
race than any other man yet mentioned.
Alderman Thompson is not sn avowed
candidate, and smiles serenely when
spoken toon I lie subject. Nevertheless
his name was on Ihe lipt of the men
who sill control delegates by tens and
tcnllrs. They said Thompson is one
of the best campaigners the party ever
produced. They pointed to his con
servative record in Ihe city council and
drew attention to the fact Ihat hu would
gather in the major portion of the
Harlan following and garner likewme
much of Ihe independent strength which
hrs previously gone lo Harrison."
