Oregon pine needles or those long slen der spears that grow on pine tree* in lieu of leaves, have fallvu on the ground for countlees agee, to be converted into eoil by the slow process of decomposition, or into ashes by the quicker medium of tire, without a thought being given to their cuHimrrcial value. The condition now to be changed, according to D. A. Cords, president of the Pacific Pine Needle Company, of Grants Pass, who is spending a few days at the Imperial, in company with bis wife. Mr. (.'ords says the pine needles of Southern Oregon are now worth |5 a ton delivered at bis fac tory, and that .is the enterprise grows, whole families may engage in picking pine needles as they pick grapes in California vineyaide. The uses to which pine ueedles may be put are many, Mr. Cords sa) s, but Ger many has hitherto had the monopoly of the buisueee. The needles are al first boiled, and then ruu between horizontal wooden rollers, where the juice is ex tracted aud called “pine needle oil,” which is auppoeed to possess medical pro perties. Tbe pulp become a medical material for upholstering, and is said to be a good .substitute for horse hair. No bugs or insects of any kind will live in furniture which has been upholstered with pine needie wool, Mr. Cords says. Tbe Germans make flannel undercloth ing of tbe fiber, as well as socks tor men aud stockings for women: while knee warmers, knitting and darning yarn, cork soles, quilts, wadding, deaieuing paper tor walls, pine-needle soap, incense and even cigars made from this raw material have been imported from Geraiany for 40 years Bathing resorts.have also been estab lisbed by the Ihriily L'eutons at points where the pine needles are crushed, and these resorts have lung been popular with people atilicted witli rheumatism con sumption, etc. Mi. Cords hopes to make Grants Dais a.Mecca tor alllictvd people as tbe climate is mild and equable at all times of tbe year, while the winters are simply superb in their freedom from high winds or severe frosts, and Grants Pass has more sunny days than any other portion ot Western Oregon.—Ore gonian Nov. lb. jj . 1899. is very little timber land yet vacant'aud • very one ahould try and avail them selves of their timber right before it is too late—Del Norte Record. en teaed, bocaute ot it* injury to tbe trad« of Ja|>at>.
