A few days ago the southern train
from R<*>ebiirg brought to Salem a
stout and pleasant faced man, ac
companied by a tall and wiry built
man of nearly eighty years. The
former had a pleasant smile and
kindly voice, while the querul- us
speech and listless stare of the old
man told that his reason had lie-
come dethroned, and that this big
and good-natured looking fellow
was his keeper, on the way from
Southern Oregon to the State in
firmary for the insane. The deputy
sheriff was Clay Slocum, of Rose
burg, while the poor, demented old
wreck at his side was one of the
grandest men of Oregon—Jesse Ap
plegate, the "sage of Yoncolla,” as
lie was called in the years that have
flown. The brave old man, whose
name is part and parcel of the his
tory of the times that tried men’s
souls," is among those who are in
the condition of living death. He
