July 21, Walmart. Kristen M.
Petersen, 30, no address given,
was arrested on a misdemeanor
warrant issued by Polk County.
• Warrant service, 4:20 p.m.
July 22, Fred Meyer. Lori Su-
zanne Smith, 60, of Astoria was
arrested on a failure-to-appear
felony warrant issued by Clatsop
County.
Wash., was cited for third-de-
gree theft after he allegedly
attempted to leave the store
without paying for $26 in meat.
• Theft of laptop computer, 9:58
a.m. July 18, 1900 block Airport
Lane. A business reported the
theft of a $600 laptop.
• Robbery, 7:52 a.m. July 21,
Walmart. The store reported
the theft of two wide-screen TVs
with a total value of $1,146. The
suspect left in a red 2001 Pontiac
Aztek sport-utility vehicle with
Utah plates.
• Shoplifting, 3:50 p.m. July 21,
Fred Meyer. Brett William Mor-
ris, 53, of Astoria was cited for
third-degree theft and criminal
trespassing after he attempted
to leave the store without paying
for $97 in food, a cannabis mag-
azine and boxer shorts.

Thefts and burglaries
• Shoplifting, 9:32 p.m. July 13,
Walmart. An unknown person
ran from the store with $856
in merchandise, including a
flashlight, mixer, and vacuum
cleaner.
• Shoplifting, 4:20 p.m. July 22,

second-degree theft and crimi-
nal trespassing after he allegedly

While Clatsop County ben-
efitted from a wet spring and
early summer, parts of the
state remain in significant
drought, with this week’s
heat exacerbating conditions.
During a drought, fish face
challenges. Low water can
strand them and make mi-
grating to the ocean more dif-
ficult for juveniles. Adult fish
returning to home rivers may
struggle to survive and can
fail to spawn the next genera-
tion of fish.
With food and water scarc-
er, birds and mammals can
become weaker and their
young less likely to survive.

Drought stresses fish and wildlife
get enough forage to feed
their young. The number of
frogs in dwindling pools can
lead to more competition,
poorer growth, greater dis-
ease risk and lower survival.
No one can control the
weather, but everyone spend-
ing time outdoors can take
steps to reduce unintended
impacts.
• Don’t hike or bike off trail.
Off-roaders should avoid
driving through streambeds.
Keep dogs on a leash.
• Fish in the mornings and
evenings. Swim in larger
water bodies where fish and
other critters aren’t congre-
gating.
• Camp away from water
holes, rivers and streams
as your presence may scare
wildlife away from a needed
drinking source.
• Enjoy wildlife from afar
with binoculars.
