Accessibility is a gift, thanks to Community Action Team
Community Action Team
has created a new program
designed to repurpose items
that help those with mobility
challenges.
The Revolving Wheelchair
Ramps and Lifts Program
was developed by the non-
profit CAT, which serves Clat-
sop, Tillamook and Columbia
counties.
Gwen McMartin, a St. Hel-
ens resident, was the first per-
son to receive help through
the program. She was recently
diagnosed with ALS, or amyo-
trophic lateral sclerosis.
This neurodegenerative dis-
ease affects nerve cells in the
brain and spinal cord. Her
disease has affected her abili-
ty to walk, climb steps and live
the lifestyle she had just a year
ago.
Knowing that her life was
rapidly changing, she start-
ed searching for a new home
that was more accessible. She
found a home that met some
of her needs, but it lacked ac-
cess to the house.
After having difficulties find-
ing contractors, McMartin
reached out to CAT and was

the client’s needs and con-
structed a plan to provide
McMartin with a wheelchair
lift and material to construct
a landing at no cost under the
condition that she’d donate it
back after use.
McMartin’s son, Ian, and his
father, Jim McMartin, offered
to construct the wheelchair
landing and mount the wheel-
chair lift. Their combined
efforts in conjunction with
Community Action Team
played a key role in making
the project affordable.
Materials were delivered
within weeks and construc-
tion began. In two days, the
wheelchair lift and platform
were ready to use.
