The older, no longer used section of the cemetery like- ly contains what many would refer to as “marginalized” populations. There are refer- ences to Chinese and native American graves that need to be researched and verified, Goodenberger said. There are stories of grave desecration, the selling of corpses to medical schools, and the irreverent plowing of gravesites by road builders. The Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries award- ed $63,700 in grants to 19 historic cemetery projects throughout the state. Ocean View, with 16,000 inter- ments, was the only one cho- sen in Clatsop County. The state considers historic cemeteries to be those that include the burial of at least one person who died 75 years before the current date. Ocean View is one of five historic cemeteries in the Warrenton/Hammond area. The others are the Clatsop County Pauper Cemetery, Clatsop Plains Pioneer Cem- etery, the Warren Family Cemetery that includes the remains of city founder Dan- iel K. Warren and his wife, and Fort Stevens Military Cemetery.
