The Columbia Press Junee 3, 2022 Park volunteers could find themselves in the weeds Lewis and Clark National Historical Park seeks folks who like to get their hands dirty. Volunteers are invited to work and learn alongside na- tional park staff during week- ly garden parties. Work parties will be held at the ethnobotanical gar- den at Netul Landing from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursdays begin- ning June 9 and continuing through September. While helping the park, volunteers learn about na- tive plants and their tradi- tional uses. There will also be opportunities to share ideas for your own yard/ Schools to receive opioid toolkits Schools will soon receive a fentanyl and opioid response toolkit, thanks to Oregon Health Authority and Oregon Department of Educations. The toolkits are in response to the public health crisis of opioid overdoses and deaths. This toolkit provides infor- mation about how schools can create an emergency pro- tocol to administer naloxone, also known as Narcan. The toolkit includes infor- mation on how to access, administer and store the life-saving opioid overdose prevention medication. From May 2020 to April 2021, deaths due to acci- dental overdose surpassed 100,000 for the first time on record, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Sixty-four percent of the deaths were at- tributed to illicitly manufac- tured fentanyl, which often comes in the form of pills that closely resemble prescription oxycodone or benzodiaze- pines such as Xanax. In Oregon, fentanyl-related overdose deaths increased by 74 percent from 2019 to 2020. 5 CCA wins grant to help homeless Clatsop Community Ac- tion received a $5,000 grant from the Pacific Pow- er Foundation to be used for personal care assistance, including basic health and hygiene resources, for peo- ple experiencing poverty and homelessness in rural Clatsop County.
