Warrenton resident
Sally
Smother-
man, a longtime
former
secretary
at Warrenton High
School, died Sun-
day, Feb. 20, at her
home in Warrenton.
She was 86.
Sally began her
career as a school
secretary at Fort
Stevens Jr High in 1969. She
transferred to Warrenton
High in 1971.
When her husband, Eddie
Ray, died, she took over the
family’s commercial fishing
business, still retaining her
job at WHS.
With the help of her sons,
she
successfully
owned
and operated three com-
mercial
fishing
vessels.
Sally enjoyed life to the full-
est. She was an avid golfer.
As a member of the Asto-
ria Golf and Country
Club, she enjoyed
many rounds of golf
with her husband.
After his passing,
she petitioned for
the right to retain
her membership to
the Country Club
and was granted ac-
ceptance,
making
her the first of many women
to have membership.
She loved church and com-
munity. She bought her chil-
dren Warrenton High School
shirts or sweatshirts from the
booster clubs as a Christmas
tradition each year.
She loved Warrenton and
was very proud of all the
students
and
successes.
She was preceded in death by
two sons, Kelly Smotherman
and Scott Smotherman. Sur-
vivors include two sons, Steve
Hitchman of Warrenton, and
Russell Smotherman of War-

Feb. 27 at Hughes-Ransom
Mortuary in Astoria. A funer-
al service was held Feb. 28 at
Hughes-Ransom followed by
graveside services at Ocean
View Cemetery in Warren-
ton.
In lieu of flowers, the fam-
ily suggests contributions
be made in her name to the
Deep Sea Fishermen’s Bene-
fit Fund, P.O. Box 1062, War-
renton 97146.
Letter to the Editor
A tip from dad for
tough situations
A tip for you I recently re-
membered from my father,
Les Newton.
Les was a farm boy who quit
school during the 10th grade
to feed his family because his
father had passed.
He was given an overload
ticket with one log on the
log truck, he was chosen as
Admiral Kaufman’s flight
mechanic in the Pacific The-
ater from Australia to the
signing in Japan, he had a
photographic memory, and
he was a very successful busi-
nessman who recovered after
going broke once. He also
served as a Warrenton city
commissioner for 10 years
and as Warrenton mayor for
17 years.
My father told me that
when you have to do some-
thing, such as tighten a bolt
with your fingers when you
can’t see a thing, close your
eyes and it will be much eas-
ier to do.
It might be because your
eyesight is “static” you don’t
need it, or it could be that
then you can visualize what
you are trying to do.
I hope you enjoy this gift
to you from my father, who
was born just a farm boy
on the homestead, and who
climbed steadily up from
there.
Rick Newton
