Warrenton High kicks off football season
Joshua Earls and
teammates board
the bus for last
Friday’s Willamina
Jamboree.

For The Columbia Press
Warrior football was back in
action as the team headed off
to the Willamina Jamboree
last Friday.
“I’m excited. I think we are
a really good team,” safety/re-
ceiver Joshua Earls said as the
team boarded the bus. “Yeah,
we’ve lost some players, but
others have stepped up to fill
those roles. Our strength is
an offense backed by Hordie
Boden Boden.”
And then he thought a bit.
“Our weakness is our fo-
cus. We’re a little loose, a lit-
tle too comfortable. We need
Bruce Dustin
Ethan Caldwell
to play up, to play a little bit
harder.”
The weakness also was
clear to Assistant Coach Cade
Wilkins, a government, eco-
nomics, and weight training
teacher at the high school.
“Football? We have a new
front line, but they’re solid,”
Wilkins said. “The backfield
is experienced and good. We
were league champs last year
September 3, 2021
and we hope to do that again.”
After the game, linebacker/
receiver Ethan Caldwell said
the season looked promising.
“It got me excited, the way
we could take in the opportu-
nities, the accomplishments
that we made,” he said.
Standouts, according to
Ethan, were Kaison Smith, a
left tackle, Josh Smith, a left
guard, and Ryder Sturgell, an
inside linebacker.
“Josh never let the energy
go down,” he said. “He picked
up his teammates emotional-
ly. Ryder is only a freshman,
but he wasn’t afraid to make a
tackle. Good for him.”
The Warriors’ first home
game is at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept.
3, against Knappa.
