Abel www.corkeycomics.com ODF declares fire season in Clatsop County Clatsop County’s fire sea- son officially begins at 1 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, the Ore- gon Department of Forestry declared. Fire season begins each year when conditions are ripe for a fire, such as a buildup of weedy and woody debris, high temperatures and wind. The declaration affects all land, public and private, in the county, which joins most other regions of the state al- ready in fire season. The declaration includes industrial forest operations, imposing various restrictions on operations to protect for- est resources. For the public, restriction levels move from low (green) to extreme (red), which can be found on fire information boards at major roads enter- ing forested areas. Campfires are still allowed at campsites, both designated sites and at dispersed sites. As conditions dry out (blue level), campfires won’t be al- lowed. A countywide burn ban is in effect simultaneously. Open debris burning will not be allowed after Mon- day. Burn barrels require a burn permit, which can be obtained through the Oregon Department of Forestry or lo- cal fire departments, depend- ing on the location. Work to begin at ‘new’ county park The public boat launch site at Westport will close July 1 when Clatsop Coun- ty starts construction on its long-awaited new boating recreation facility. The closure will affect the boat ramp and adjacent park- ing area, and is expected to last through November. The county project includes construction of a new boat ramp, as well as a 300-foot short-term tie-up dock and kayak launch, plus paved parking and restrooms. A second phase of the project includes construction of a picnic area and playground. Along with funding from Clatsop County and the Ore- gon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the project is also made possible with funding from the Oregon State Ma- rine Board.
