City commissioners unan- imously approved a series of increases Tuesday night de- signed to set the marinas on a path toward independence. “Not everybody in the com- munity uses the marina, so we need to make sure its services pay for themselves,” Mayor Henry Balensifer said. “Ser- vices (provided) should be paid for by rates charged.” Taxpayers have funded multi-million-dollar improve- ments at Warrenton Marina during the past 12 years by paying property taxes collect- ed through the Warrenton Ur- ban Renewal Agency. The new fees for moorage, hoist rental and electricity are expected to raise an addition- al $52,000 this year at War- renton and $15,000 at Ham- mond Marina. “The proposed rate increas- es are necessary to aid in fu- Joyce Carrell/For The Columbia Press The commercial dock at Warrenton Marina was rebuilt using urban renewal money. ture capital improvements, such as the Warrenton pier improvements, repairs and future dock replacement,” Harbormaster Jane Sweet told commissioners. In Hammond, the addition- al money will be used for con- tinued maintenance dredging, bank stabilization and future dock replacement. “(It’s for) All of the things that have been in dire need and that we’ve never really had a specific budget or fund for,” Sweet said. Earlier this year, commis- sioners appointed a marina advisory committee, which has been working on rate ad- justments. Several city commission- ers wanted the committee to make more revisions, increas- ing fees that seemed low. “This needs to go into effect yesterday,” marina committee Chair Pam Ackley reminded them. Boating, camping and fishing season is here, she said. Fees approved Tuesday will go into effect July 1: • Moorage rates at both ma- rinas will be $42 per foot for recreational vessels and $45 per foot for commercial ves- sels based on slip size. The rates will increase by $2 per year for the next three years. Transient, or short-term, moorage rates also will in- crease. • Replacing a key for the re- strooms/showers, docks and oil dump will be $75. • Launch fees are $10 per launch or $150 annually. • Vehicle parking is $10 per day or $100 per month; with a boat trailer, the fee is $150 per month. • Hiring the city’s hoist and crane operator is $150 per hour. • Camping fees are $50 per night for no-service dry camp spots. • Fines for littering, or unau- thorized use of marina trash bins, up to $300.
