Performance delves into love and politics A joint venture between Astor Street Opry Company and the Astoria Scandinavian Midsummer Festival Associ- ation will bring a piece of his- tory to life. “Rakkautta ja Politikkaa,” or “Love and Politics,” was found in the attic of Suomi Hall. The one-act play was published in 1906 in Ha- meenlinna, Finland, and translated from Finnish by Sirpa Duoos, Clatsop Coun- ty’s property management specialist. The Astoria Finnish Social- ist Club was built in 1910, when Astoria’s Uniontown was large enough to support two Finnish-language news- papers (including the Co- lumbia Press’s former incar- nation, Lannen Suometar), Finnish Brotherhood, the Finnish Temperance Society, half a dozen public saunas, four churches, and a dozen boarding houses. The Socialist Club stood four stories and its theater had a professional stage di- rector from Helsinki who produced new plays every two weeks. When the So- cialist Club burned in 1923, the actors transferred to the stage at the Finnish Brother- hood. Many scripts of the plays produced on the Finnish Brotherhood stage have been stored for years in the attic of Suomi Hall and that’s where the script for Love and Poli- tics was found. “Love and Politics” is set in a small Finnish town. The project was funded by the Clatsop Cultural Coa- lition and Oregon Cultural Trust. Maritime museum showing new 3D movie Columbia River Maritime Museum has a new movie showing in the 3D theater, “Ocean Odyssey,” which fol- lows the journey of hump- back whales on their 2,000- mile migration from the Great Barrier Reef to their feeding grounds in Antarcti- ca. Also featured is the latest exhibit, “Twin Palaces of the Pacific,” which focuses on twin ships Great Northern and Northern Pacific. The fast luxury liners carried pas- sengers between San Fran- cisco and Astoria. The movie and visits to the gift shop are free for mem- bers.
