Her research has spanned most of the United States, from the colonial period to the 20th century. But having married into the Oberndorf family, she has been naturally drawn into research in German ge- nealogy. She is also interested in lo- cal history and is a volunteer at the Columbia County His- torical Museum. Participants do not need to be members to go to this meeting. Day of Caring easy way to volunteer Volunteer Day of Caring could be the perfect event for those who’d like to show their love to the community but can’t devote volunteer time every week. The Day of Caring is Satur- day, April 17, and four proj- ects have been organized by the United Way of Clatsop County: Landscaping at As- toria’s Hilltop Apartments, skimming plastic foam off Long Lake at Camp Kiwan- ilong, tidying Seaside Com- munity Gardens, and donat- ing essential items at various sites. Drive-through drop-off sites will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 17 at Barbey Center next to the Columbia River Maritime Museum, 1792 Marine Drive; Camp Kiwanilong, 595 S.W. Ridge Road, Warrenton; and Rail- road Community Gardens, 1000 block of South Irvine Place near KFC in Seaside. Items to donate include nonperishable food, dental care, personal care such as soap and toilet paper, pet food, diapers and baby food, bus passes, gas cards, pre- paid phone cards and grocery store gift cards. Handwritten words of encouragement for students and educators will also be accepted. Donated items also can be dropped off at the admissions desk at the Maritime Muse- um from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 15 and 16. Virtual concert to focus on heritage “Crossing Borders: Af- ricamerica,” a virtual musical event that traces America’s musical heritage from Afri- ca, through Cuba and into the South, is set for 6:30 p.m. Sunday, April 18. The concert is free, although donations will be encouraged during the performances. Money collected benefits BRAVO Youth Orchestras, which aims to improve the lives of underserved children through intensive orchestral instruction. Students in the program also will perform alongside professional artists from around the world. Featured performers in- clude Alex Addy of Ghana, Norman Sylvester in concert. who moved to Portland at age 15 and comes from a long line of drummers; Alma Martinez of Cuba, a first-generation Cu- ban-American from Miami who now lives in Vancou- ver, Wash., with her sing- er-songwriter spouse, Alex; Norman “Boogie Cat” Syl- vester of Louisiana, an Or- egon Music Hall of Fame inductee described as one of the most engaging show- men in the Northwest. Guest speaker is Adri- enne Nelson, the first Afri- can-American to serve on the Oregon Supreme Court. She was appointed by Gov. Kate Brown in January 2018. All-class reunion in the works An all-class reunion of Warrenton High alumni is being organized for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 24 in the cam- pus cafeteria. Organizers suggest that in- dividual classes plan get-to- gethers in the evening after the event. The all-class reunion has been a tradition for about 40 years and is held every other year.
