The Columbia Press March 19, 2021 Warriors take win against Rainier in nail-biter By Bruce Dustin For The Columbia Press It was a bitter cold night as Warrenton’s football team played at Rainier last Friday. The game was the second of the season for both teams. Rainier had beaten Clatskanie by a score of 50-0, and Warren- ton had beaten Corbett 46-12. So, it was heads-on against two powerful league teams to estab- lish dominance. Rainier was awarded the ini- tial kick-off, but on the third down of the first possession, they threw an interception to Warrenton’s Joshua Earls. Maybe it was a precursor to how the game would go. It was a tough first quarter battle that ended in a scoreless tie. In the second quarter, Rainier was on its 20 and players were moving the ball steadily and ef- ficiently to the goal line. Bruce Dustin Hordie Bodden Bodden, center right, runs with the ball against Rainier. It was fourth and goal from their 1 yard line with 10:04 on the clock. They were going to go for it. Warrenton called a time out, but it couldn’t stop Rainier’s momentum. Touchdown Rain- ier with 09:43 left on the first- half clock. A two-point conver- sion gave them an 8-0 lead. Warrenton then received the kickoff. In the first play of their possession, Hordie Bodden Bodden shot a pass to Ethan Caldwell, who ran it in for a touchdown. A two-point con- version tied the score at 8-8 with 09:29 on the clock. The live event will cover earned benefits and other re- sources available to veterans and their families, includ- ing disability compensation, Agent Orange exposure and presumptive diseases, health care and behavioral health services — as well as more re- cent changes to benefits such as the Blue Water Navy Viet- nam Veterans Act of 2019. Trained and federally ac- credited Veteran service Of- ficers and other benefits ex- perts will be on hand to assist participants, including filing a claim for benefits or an appeal for those denied previously. In addition to providing in- formation, the purpose of the event is for directors of both agencies to hear directly from veterans about their experience accessing benefits and chal- lenges they’ve encountered. Warrenton reciprocated with 02:00 left in the half. With 00:37 remaining, Rain- ier was on their 30-yard line, ready to run it in for a touch- down. One play later, they were at a first and 10 with 00:08 on the clock. Warrenton stopped them, drove them back for a loss. The first half ended in a tie, 8-8. At the end of the third quarter the game remained tied at 8-8. At fourth down and three yards to go, and with 05:54 left in the game, Warrenton had the ball. It was a fourth and three. The Warriors weren’t able to cash in on an extra point, but Warrenton was in the lead for the first time in the game, 14-8. There was still 05:49 left in the game, plenty of time for Rainier to make a comeback. They were on the 50-yard line with their second down and 15 yards to go. They gained nine yards, now it was third and 6. They were penalized, then it was third and 16. Then fourth and 7. They went for the first down, but didn’t make it. It was the Warriors’ first and 10 at their own 42-yard line. Jordan Martinez caught a pass, making it third and 3 with 02:38 on the clock. Hordie ran for a first down. At 02:31, Warrenton was on the 26-yard line. Third and 9, then fourth and 3. They weren’t able to score. Rainier had the ball but fum- bled on Warrenton’s 3-yard line.
