The Columbia Press 6 October 30, 2020 Letters to the Editor Vote red for law, and order, other protected rights There is no question we are living in unprecedented times. Our state faces so many is- sues that could be rectified if our elected legislators and officials would do the right thing. Our governor and her Democratic leaders have refused to protect citizens and businesses by allowing violence, destruction, and crime to run rampant. They are not supporting law en- forcement, but instead turn- ing their backs on the very people who elected them to protect us. The Marxist, BLM and An- tifa terrorists masquerading as protestors have occu- pied the streets of Portland where they are looting and burning businesses, and attacking anyone who at- tempts to stop them, includ- ing police. Simply put, it is unameri- can. Portland’s mayor is an embarrassment. Gearhart, Oregon 97138 We are already taxed to our eyeballs in this state. Our tax money is funding free abor- tions every single day. The governor’s cap-and-regu- late bill would be devastat- ing to so many businesses and families, piling on more taxes. Oregon is the fourth larg- est tax-and-spend state in the nation. Check out Tax- payer Association of Ore- gon. Our religious freedoms are being threatened more and more. Everyone has faced struggles against COVID, and rules for church gath- erings have created prob- lems for churches to remain open. It is Satan’s plan to divide and conquer, and it is our duty to fight against it. The Constitution’s Second Amendment is threatened more than ever. The right to bear arms never ceases; stand firm in this battle. The list goes on and on. State legislators need to remember they work for us, not the other way around. If you care about your state and your freedoms, you will vote red. Our future gener- ations are counting on you. Judy Hixson Seaside Candidate will support women “The decision whether or not to bear a child is cen- tral to a woman’s life, to her well-being and dignity. It is a decision she must make for herself. When the gov- ernment controls that de- cision for her, she is being treated as less than a full adult human responsible for her own choices.” -- Jus- tice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. It’s hard not to feel defeat- ed by her loss, but for the sake of our community, I urge you to look at threats happening locally as well as nationally. Suzanne Weber, one of the candidates running in our district is backed by Ore- gon Right to Life, a far-right anti-abortion lobby group that wants to ban abortions, even in cases of rape and in- cest. As a woman, the thought of having my right to health- care taken away, especially in tragic circumstances, is terrifying. Healthcare de- cisions need to be made between a woman/person who is pregnant and their doctor, not politicians. “Women in powerful posi- tions isn’t inherently fem- inist, especially when they use their power to harm more marginalized wom- en.” We have the chance to sup- port a local candidate who will be the voice we need and who will stand for the rights of women and non- binary people of all classes, colors, and sexual orienta- tions. Debbie Boothe-Schmidt will ensure that we have autonomy over our own bodies. Please join me in supporting and voting for Debbie Boothe-Schmidt to ensure our district is not in the hands of an anti-choice candidate like Suzanne We- ber.
