Wrestlers take Warriors near state playoffs
third at tourny

Warrenton’s boys wres-
tling team finished third of 18
teams at the 3A Special Dis-
trict 2 Tournament at Amity
High School last weekend,
besting last year’s fifth-place
finish.
The top three wrestlers at
each weight class qualified for
state.
The team had five qualifiers,
another improvement over
last year, when we had three.
With the addition of Yam-
hill-Carlton, the district has
become tougher. Still, War-
renton took 20 wrestlers and
16 of them placed.
Winning a district champi-
onship has big implications
for state seeding.
State is Feb. 28-29 at Me-
morial Coliseum.
Freshman Aricin Rodriquez
is district champion at 106
pounds. Aricin has gotten bet-
ter at every tournament. We
are excited for him to get to
the next level at state.
Junior Sam Irwin is district
champion at 195 pounds. Sam
has put together a stellar sea-
son, making the finals in every
tournament this year.
Junior Nic Pior took second
at 145. Nic was district cham-
pion last year and we know
he was disappointed that he
didn’t get a repeat.
Sophomore Josh Niehuser
took second at 160. Josh is
a tough kid and won a close
semifinal to earn his spot.
Sophomore Alex Tapia won
an overtime match to take
third at 152 and qualify for
state.
Senior Armin Rodriquez
ended up in fourth and
capped a terrific season and
career with Warrenton.
Improvement is always the
goal, and we exceeded that
goal as a team.
The Warriors advance
to the semi-final round in
league playoffs after beating
Clatskanie 52-48 on Tuesday.
The playoff game at War-
renton High School nearly
completes the Coastal Range
League season. Thursday
night’s game at Willamina
will decide which team goes
to state.
Warrenton is 5-5 in league
games and Willamina stands
at 4-6. The top team, Raini-
er, is undefeated in league
games.
Hordie Bodden Bodden,
Dawson Little and Devin
Jackson all did well in the
third quarter, clinching the
Warriors’ win.
