Conservancy seeks help with invasive plant
North Coast Land Conservancy
is in the final phase of a three-year
assault on a weed known as police-
man’s helmet in the Necanicum Riv-
er watershed.
Volunteers are sought for the grand
finale: a weeding party from 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20, at Cir-
cle Creek Conservation Center, at the
end of Rippet Road (turn west off
Highway 101 about a half-mile north
of the Highway 26 junction.
Policeman’s helmet is a highly in-
vasive non-native plant that has tak-
en hold throughout the Necanicum
watershed, choking out native plants
and reducing plant and animal di-
versity while increasing the risk of
streambank erosion.
To help, or for more information,
contact land steward Eric Owen at
503-738-9126.
Volunteers sit atop a p ile of police-
man’s helmet pulled in July 2018.
