WHS wrestlers compete in Pac Rim tourney

WHS girls place fourth in Forest Grove

Last weekend’s Pac Rim
Wrestling Tournament was
very competitive.
The annual tournament, at-
tended by 17 schools from the
Pacific Northwest, was host-
ed by the Seaside wrestling
team.
Warrenton wrestled hard,
but in some matches our
wrestlers made critical mis-
takes, and it cost them.
Warrenton had a total of
three placers in the tourna-
ment.
Freshman Austin Atwood,
wrestling at 120 pounds,
placed fifth. Freshman Park-
er Greenawald, 132 pounds,
placed sixth. Senior Giovanni
Martinez pinned a wrestler
who placed fourth at state last
year. Gio pinned him in the
third round this year to place
third at 152 pounds.
Austin and Parker, being
only freshmen, showed that
it doesn’t matter what grade
you’re in to be successful on
the mat.
Gio has been working hard
both on and off the mat, and
it showed.
He has placed in the top
three at every tournament in
which he has participated.
We had other wrestlers
in the JV tournament who
mopped the floor (or the mat,
I guess I should say) with
their opponents.
Paddy McCargish pinned all
three of his opponents to gain
his first three wins of the sea-
son.
Armin Rodriquez beat all
three of his opponents with
ease. Nic Pior (yeah, that’s
me) was out with a thumb
injury for three tournaments
and then came back in this JV
tournament to beat all three
of his opponents. Wahoo!
Overall, our wrestlers had
some astonishing wins. But as

teams and our girls placed
fourth.
Sahanna Rodriquez won
her third match by a pin in
the third round, where she
was down 3-10 to place first
at 100 pounds.

a team, we hope to do better.
Warrenton placed 11th over-
all, which goes to show that
we still have things to work
on, but we shouldn’t hold our
heads down. We still looked
pretty good.
Now, we’re getting ready for
the Oregon Classic this week-
end in Redmond. The classic
is something we haven’t been
to in a few years, but is one of
the biggest tournaments we
will go to this year.
Every match affects our dis-
trict’s ranking, so we’re going
to be ready and wrestle hard.

member of Warrenton High
School’s wrestling team.
Tickets on sale for chamber banquet
“Wild West” is the theme of this year’s Astoria-War-
renton Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting and
banquet.
Tickets are $40 and are now on sale for the event, set
for 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Clatsop County
Fairgrounds, 92937 Walluski Loop, Astoria.
Tickets include dinner and one raffle ticket. There also
will be a blind drawing for wine.
After dinner, the 2018 George Award and 2018 Rich-
ard Ford Award, along with a few other honors, will be
given.
A reservation is required. Tickets can be purchased
online or in person at the chamber, 111 W. Marine Dr.,
Astoria.

The girls team has great
numbers this year and every
wrestler contributed points
in the tournament.
Their goal is to no longer
place below first in a tourna-
ment; they want the trophy!
Clearly, they still have
things to work on.
Basketball teams get a win and a loss

Coming off a 46-25 loss last
weekend to Taft, the War-
renton boys basketball team
bested Clatskanie at home
Tuesday, 52-41.
Dalton Knight led the War-
rior attack with 19 points,
while Devin Jackson and
Ayden Stephens followed
with 10 points each.
Warrenton’s girls basket-
ball team rode a tremendous
high after last weekend’s
thrashing of Taft 61-19, but
came crashing back to earth
with a 55-45 loss to Clats-
kanie on Tuesday.
Kenzie Ramsey had 15
points in the game, followed
by Claire Bussert with 12.
Both boys and girls play
away at Willamina today,
Jan. 18.
