Lecture is on region’s economic history
Astoria’s economic history
is the topic of the next Ales &
Ideas lecture at 7 p.m. Thurs-
day, Dec. 6, in the George
Lovell Showroom at Fort
George Brewery, 14th and
Duane streets, Astoria.
It’s a tale of booms, busts
and recoveries, says lecturer
Kevin Leahy, director of Clat-
sop Community College’s
small business development
center. Three advisers and
coordinators at the center
also will participate.
Astoria is the oldest Amer-
ican settlement west of the
Rockies, and has seen more
than its share of trials and
tribulations in the 217 years
since its founding.
Leahy and his team will use
an economic lens to tell their
tales about the industries
that built Astoria and Clatsop
County, including downtown
Astoria, and attenders will
learn how the community
has a bright economic future.
Leahy grew up in Astoria
and returned after 27 years
of executive experience with
May Department Stores
(Meier & Frank and Rob-
insons-May) and six years
owning his own small busi-
ness. He has served as CE-
DR’s executive director since
2011.
The lecture series is
co-sponsored by the college
and Fort George.
Doors open at 6 p.m. with
food and beverage service,
although no purchase is re-
quired. Minors are welcome.
Oregon’s
new
outdoor
sports
licensing
system
launches Saturday, Dec. 1.
Hunters and anglers should
use their hunter/angler iden-
tification number to verify
their account in the new sys-
tem, which can be done either
online at MyODFW.com or at
a license sales agent. The ID
number is printed on all li-
censes and tags and stays the
same from year to year. It will
be known as the “ODFW ID#”
in the new licensing system.

ODFW’s new electronic
licensing system was an-
nounced in early August.
With the new system, hunters
and anglers can carry their
documents electronically on
their smartphone or tablet
and tag fish and wildlife with
a mobile app that will even
work offline.
Sportsmen and women still
can use paper documents, but
will be able to buy the licens-
es online and print licenses
and tags at home on regular
paper.
The majority of license sales
agents have agreed to contin-
ue selling ODFW documents
through the new system.

present a program that in-
cludes the premiere of An-
gelis’ recent composition
based on the Magnifi-cat,
“My Soul Glorifies the Lord,”
which was commissioned by
Pioneer Church.
Joining Angelis, a violinist,
will be soprano Bereniece
Jones-Centeno and pianist
Jennifer
Goodenberger.
The program includes both
classically influenced com-
positions and contemplative
works.
Admission is by donation
and refreshments will be

Seaside Festival of Trees includes free open house
A free community open
house and Candy Cane Lane,
part of Safeway Providence
Festival of Trees, is from
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday,
Dec. 1, at Seaside Civic and
Convention Center.
A dinner and auction will
be from 5:30 to 9 p.m. that
evening.
The event, held for more
than 20 years, raises money
for the Providence Seaside
Hospital Foundation.
Tickets for the dinner and
auction are $100 per per-
son and include food, wine
and silent auction packag-
es.
Advance purchase is re-
quired as the event is limit-
ed to 350 guests.
