artists featured
Clatsop Community College
will present a lecture and
slide show featuring nine art-
ists from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 17 in
the college’s arts building.
Featured artists are Baye
Riddell, Wi Taepa, Paerau
Corneal, Dorothy Waetford,
Carla Ruka, Rhonda Halli-
day, Stevei Houkamau, Karu-
na Douglas and Todd Doug-
las.
The artists are part of the
Nga Kaihanga Uku/Maori
Clay Artists Collective in New
Zealand. The collective began
in 1987 and was the birth of
a new movement in world ce-
ramics.
Riddell had begun his ca-
reer as a potter 13 years ear-
lier, ostensibly the first full-
time Maori potter.
In later years, Riddell was
joined by others and they
were dubbed the Tight Five
or Nga Tokorima. They have
since nurtured and been add-
ed to by an accomplished new
generation of artists.
