Maritime: Good news for program
Continued from Page 1
Should the two-year college
be named a Domestic Mar-
itime Center of Excellence,
it will be able to admit more
students, expand training fa-
cilities, hire more faculty and
create new maritime career
paths. The act also allows the
college to award credit for
prior learning experiences,
including military service.
“This is huge for us,” said
Bill Antilla, Maritime Tech-
nology instructor at the col-
lege. “There are a handful of
colleges that could qualify for
this and we are one of them.”
College President Chris
Breitmeyer pointed out that
Clatsop’s position on the Pa-
cific Ocean at the mouth of
the Columbia River should
give the college a high chance
of winning the designation.
“We are honored and great-
ly appreciative that Congress
is recognizing community
colleges as training sourc-
es for mariners and marine
technology workers,” Breit-
meyer said. “(We) welcome
the opportunity to produce
highly qualified workers to
enter the maritime workforce
and alleviate the shortages
that are occurring due to re-
tirements and the expanding
global market.”
The next step is for the U.S.
Maritime Administration to
determine the criteria for
qualifying colleges.
“Not only does this open
doors for resources and di-
rect funding, it recognizes
the maritime industry as a
valuable occupation,” Antil-
la said. “People don’t always
recognize what a lucrative
opportunity the maritime
industry can be. We need se-
rious students in these pro-
grams to fill the demand of
these good-paying jobs.”
Besides additional funds,
the Maritime Administra-
tion would provide support,
technical assistance and even
surplus federal assets like
marine vessels to community
and technical colleges to use
in their training programs.
Industry leaders have no-
ticed a shortage of quali-
fied maritime workers. The
maritime industry requires
technical skills training and
licensing -- even for en-
try-level positions.
To earn credentials for each
level of employment, mari-
time workers must complete
regular training, which can
be provided by community
and technical colleges at an
affordable cost.
Today, students here at the
Marine and Environmental
Research and Training Sta-
tion, or MERTS, can get cer-
tified in seamanship, vessel
operations and other special-
ized training.
