VFW sponsors two writing contests
The VFW is sponsoring a
Voice of Democracy patriot-
ic student essay contest with
entries due Oct. 31.
This year’s theme is “Amer-
ican History: Our Hope for
the Future.”
Voice of Democracy has
been the Veterans of Foreign
Wars’ primary scholarship
program since 1947. Each
year, nearly 40,000 high
school students compete
for more than $2 million in
scholarships and incentives
by writing and recording an
audio essay.
More than $154,000 will
be awarded nationally, with
the top scholarship being
$30,000.
A second contest, the Pa-
triot’s Pen, is for students to
write 300- to 400-word es-
says on the theme “America’s
Gift to My Generation.” All
essays should be typed and
students will be judged on
theme development, knowl-
edge and clarity of ideas.
Both contests are open to
students in grades 9 through
12 enrolled in public, private
or parochial high schools or
home study programs.

The group provides positive
experiences and life skills for
those age 5 to 19.
The county’s 4-H has spots
for those interested in lead-
ership, dog training, prod-
