NEWS MyEagleNews.com Drought aff ects dock placement Bulletin staff report BEND — Boaters will be feel- ing the impact of Central Ore- gon’s drought at several area lakes this summer. The U.S. For- est Service announced Friday that low lake levels are preventing the installation of docks at both East Lake and Crescent Lake. Cinder Hill Boating, East Lake Boating, and Hot Springs Boating, all at East Lake, will not receive dock installation this year. The East Lake water level does not reach the East Lake boat ramp. The ramps at Cinder Hill and Hot Springs currently extend into the lake at a shallow depth but are likely to recede through the sum- mer, according to a release from the Forest Service. The Forest Service is working on a strategy to address future access to East Lake. The Forest Service will sim- ilarly not be installing docks at both Spring Boating and Cres- cent Lake boating, both at Cres- cent Lake. However, the low water boat ramp at Crescent Lake is open. At Wickiup Reservoir, the North Wickiup Boating docks will also not be installed due to low water levels. Docks on Paulina Lake at Lit- tle Crater Boating and Paulina Lake Campground were sched- uled to be installed Friday, June 3. Wednesday, June 8, 2022 A5 Jefferson sheriff plans to step down Bulletin staff report MADRAS — Jeff erson County Sheriff Marc Heck- athorn will leave offi ce six months early following a stinging loss to a subor- dinate deputy in the May primary. Jason Pollock earned more than 50% of the vote in the three-way primary held May 17, meaning he will be the only name on the November general election ballot. But on Wednesday, June 1, Heckathorn signed an agreement with the Jeff er- son County Commission Submitted Photos Marc Heckathorn, left, and Jason Pollock to leave offi ce June 20 in exchange for the money he would have earned work- ing until the end of his term: $82,625, according to The Madras Pioneer. Pollock would have taken over as sheriff on Jan. 1, but is now expected to start the job when Heckathorn leaves later this month. Heckathorn was appointed sheriff by the County Commission in 2021 and was running for the fi rst time to keep his seat when the Bulletin reported in March he’d encouraged a friend to run as the race’s third contender and force a May primary. Then, two weeks before the election, a pair of prominent Jeff erson County law enforcement offi cials, District Attor- ney Steve Leriche and for- mer Sheriff Jim Adkins, announced their support for Pollock. Heckathorn did not return a request for comment. COPS AND COURTS Arrests and citations in the Blue Mountain Eagle are taken from the logs of law enforcement agencies.
