NEWS MyEagleNews.com Wednesday, May 25, 2022 A5 Man gets prison in fatal hit-and-run Four arrested in graffi ti spree East Oregonian By GARRETT ANDREWS The Bulletin BEND — Anthony Rubald- ino Vasquez was sentenced to 13 months in prison Thursday, May 19, for being impaired while driv- ing when he struck and killed a 90-year-old pedestrian in Red- mond in 2020. He also received an invitation. “Maybe someday you will come to my house and you will ask for forgiveness,” said Loren Hall, son of the man Vasquez killed. “Not here, because I don’t know that I can truly trust what you say here. But I hope that someday you look me up.” Vasquez, 21, of Redmond, had earlier pleaded guilty in Deschutes County Circuit Court to the felonies of hit-and-run and driving under the infl uence of intoxicants. In addition to 13 months in prison, Vasquez was sentenced to a fi ve-year driver’s license suspension and three years post- prison supervision, during which he will be prohibited from mari- juana use. Around 6:07 p.m., Nov. 20, 2020, Leroy Hall walked from his home in the Four Wheels Mobile Home Court on SW Sixth Street to make a purchase at the Buggy Stop nearby. It was a route he used routinely, said prosecutor Garrett Andrews/The Bulletin Loren Hall, left, son of a pedestrian killed in Redmond after being struck by a truck driven by Anthony Rubaldino Vasquez, right, pray together after Vasquez’s sentencing Thursday, May 19, 2022, in De- schutes County Circuit Court. Kyle Pearson. As he stepped into the south- bound lane of Southwest Sixth Street, he was struck by Vasquez’s 2018 GMC Yukon, throwing him to the ground, where he was struck by another vehicle. Witnesses gathered near him and attempted to revive Hall. Vasquez stopped briefl y and got out of his vehicle. He was heard to say, “I hit him. I hit him.” He got back in the Yukon and drove away. He was pulled over by a Redmond Police Depart- ment offi cer shortly after. He’d switched seats with his passen- ger, his girlfriend at the time. He seemed scared and paranoid, Pearson said. Vasquez, then 19, failed mul- tiple roadside sobriety tests, and admitted to consuming mari- juana before driving. He was arrested and charged with crim- inally negligent homicide and other counts. “He ran away from the scene based on fear and being scared of what had happened,” Pearson said. Hall was a Korean War vet- eran who left behind three adult children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Though he was 90 years old, he was very much still alive, according to rel- atives. He planned to live to 100, his son said. At the time of his death, he was getting ready for a train trip to Canada the next summer. MILTON-FREEWATER — Mil- ton-Freewater police Chief Doug Boedigheimer reported law enforcement has caught three teens and one adult related to numerous cases of graffi ti. Boedigheimer in a press release Fri- day, May 20, reported members of the Mil- ton-Freewater Police Department and the Umatilla County Sheriff ’s Offi ce “collabo- rated on the detention of several juveniles and one adult who had been involved in a month’s long spree of criminal mischief to public and private property in the Mil- ton-Freewater area.” Residents have reported multiple cases of graffi ti since, according to the press release, but police had no suspects. Police and sheriff ’s deputies, with the assistance of Milton-Freewater Unifi ed School District staff , developed several juvenile suspects. Boedigheimer reported that led to referring three juveniles to the Umatilla County Juvenile Department, as well as the arrest of Harry Dwain Shaul, 19, of Milton-Freewater. Police on May 13 booked Shaul into the Umatilla County Jail, Pendleton. “The graffi ti involved in this spree was not of an apparent gang nature,” according to Boedigheimer. He explained police do not think the Nazi swastika, which is one of the graffi ti symbols, indicates white supremacist activ- ity in Milton-Freewater, and it has not been specifi cally linked to the aforementioned individuals. “The investigation into their crimes, as well as the swastika, is ongoing,” he stated. Law enforcement also is tallying the cost of the damages from the graffi ti for the purpose of helping the Umatilla County District Attorney’s Offi ce deter- mine charges. Boedigheimer credited the eff orts of law enforcement and the school district as an example of “what can be accomplished when school districts and law enforcement across various agencies work together.” Island City motorcyclist dies in crash Baker City Herald BAKER CITY — An Island City man died when he lost control of the motorcycle he was riding while exiting Interstate 84 in Baker City on Tuesday afternoon, May 17.
