I usually listen to audiobooks on my walks, but sometimes a podcast is a nice diversion. My favorite is NPR’s “Wait Wait ... Don’t Tell Me!” Described as a “weekly news quiz,” the show is hosted by Peter Sagal, who is joined by comedians every Sunday to go over happenings of the previous week. But this isn’t any old read- ing of the newspaper — instead, news items become games as callers have to answer multiple choice questions to guess what really happened, or complete the “Listener Limerick Challenge.” Although I’m in the news busi- ness, my world is mostly local news so it’s fun to catch up on npr.org headlines across the nation. If I didn’t listen to “Wait Wait” I never would have learned about the school picture fi asco in Greenwood, Indiana, where picture day fell on St. Patrick’s Day. The photo company used a green screen behind the kids to add diff erent backgrounds, but students were dressed in green to celebrate the holiday. The calendar@goeasternoregon.com SUBMIT NEWS Submit your event information by Monday for publication the New releases result is hilarious because the green shirts became part of the background, resulting in chil- dren with only arms, legs and a fl oating head. One has a white picket fence running through his midsection. (If you want to see the images, do a search on Google. It’s really funny.) This podcast makes me smile and sometimes laugh out loud. I’m sure not everyone would fi nd the content as funny as I do, but for me it’s an entertain- ing distraction and I get to learn about obscure news. Baker City was featured on RAISING THE CURTAIN ON THIS WEEK’S ISSUE an episode several years ago in a segment where panelists read three stories and the caller has to decide which one is the real news item. It was easy for me to mark the Baker City item as fake because there were little hints that only a local would know (such as the slightly wrong name of an elementary school). But for places I don’t know, sometimes it’s hard to judge truth versus fi ction. You can fi nd “Wait Wait ... Don’t Tell Me!” anywhere you like to get podcasts. We can help you get from Here to Here BIKES, SKIS, CLIMBING GEAR, ADVICE, BEER & SNACKS, RENTALS, GOOD PEOPLE following week (two weeks in advance is even better!). Go! Magazine is published Wednesdays in the  Wallowa County Chieftain and Blue Mountain Eagle. It publishes Thursdays in The Observer, Baker City Herald and East Oregonian. The band’s new album, “Back From the Dead,” is not for the faint of heart, or anyone with even a trace of a headache: It’s a full-on sonic assault of screams, wailing guitars, pounding drums and booming bass. And yet Hale manages to pull it off with a deft songwriting touch and a surprising sense of melody that belies the bombast. The title track is the band’s likely concert opener on this summer’s tour, and begins with a roar (as many of Hale’s songs do). She’s got a great scream, and she’s not afraid to use it, multiple times, on most songs. Yet she actually has a beauti- ful singing voice that can tend to get overlooked amid the shrieks. The ballads “Terrible Things” and “Raise Your Horns” feature her tender, sultry vocals that are 180 degrees from many of her other vocals, particularly those on “Wicked Ways.” — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS — LISA BRITTON, GO!
