14 SOUND CHECK MAY 4�11, 2022 WHAT’S PLAYING AROUND THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST Grande Ronde Symphony presents an evening of jazz May 13 concert features Matt Cooper and Rob Scheps Go! staff L A GRANDE — The Grande Ronde Symphony’s Cham- ber and Small Ensemble Series (CASES) is returning to live, in-person concerts with the fi rst featuring Rob Scheps and Matt Cooper in a show titled “Life Is a Lot Like Jazz!” The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, May 13, in the Groth Recital Hall in Eastern Or- egon University’s Loso Hall. Scheps is a jazz saxophonist who has performed with the likes of Aretha Franklin and Buddy Rich. He tours worldwide and leads bands in New York, Se- attle, Portland, Kansas City and Honolulu. His international tours include Finland, Canada, Mex- ico, St. Lucia, Norway, France, Italy, Germany, Taiwan, Sweden, Bermuda and Japan. His latest CD, “Comencio,” is available on Amazon and iTunes. Cooper, professor emeritus at EOU, has also performed all over the world. He specializes in jazz and classical performance. His jazz credits include a tour with the Woody Herman Orchestra and performances and record- ings with Eddie Harris, Clark Terry, Nancy King, Glen Moore, the Blue Wisp Big Band and the Les Elgart and Nelson Riddle Or- chestras, among others. He has recorded four CDs as a leader or co-leader, including with Rob Scheps on “Live at the Churchill.” “We are very excited to return to off ering a diversity of music through our Chamber and Small Ensemble Series concerts,” said Alice Trindle, president of the Grande Ronde Symphony Association. “Kicking off the 2022 season with Rob and Matt is an unbelievable opportunity to hear truly world-class jazz in an intimate setting.
