Grant Union softball head coach Zach Williams says his team is playing well, but he didn’t expect a perfect start. “We’re playing as a team, a lot of girls have contributed so far and like we thought, our depth is our strength. We sched- uled a tough stretch of games intentionally and we weren’t disappointed with the competi- tion. I expected us to be tough, but I defi nitely didn’t expect us to be 6-0.” Williams also refrains from calling his team’s win over No. 1 Scio a statement game despite the result. “Scio’s No. 1 pitcher couldn’t really throw against us. That was a bit disappoint- ing, but they’re a very solid team and we’re excited to get that win. Our hope is that the girls get better every day and keep pulling together as a team. League play starts Friday, so we really can’t aff ord to have any letdowns.” The Lady Pros are in action again on Friday, April 1, in a doubleheader against Echo/ Stanfi eld. RC Huerta, the Pros- pectors head coach, said the game started a bit slow for his team, but the squad showed resiliency and played well overall. Huerta said the team’s defense has been picking up and the Pros have been hitting the ball well. “We’ve been making good plays, and it’s encour- aging to see that,” Huerta said. One of those good plays occurred toward the end of the game when Prospector catcher Riddick Hutchison tagged out Ontario’s James Dyan at home to keep Grant Union’s comfortable lead intact. Hutchison said after the game that he thought the 2-A Prospectors were going to have their work cut out for them in facing a 4-A Ontario team, but overall he thought the team played well. “We got the sticks swinging,” Hutchison said. Huerta said he likes to get the Prospectors as many opportunities as possible to play good teams. Grant Union/Prai- rie City started the three- day tourney at the Seventh Street Sports Complex on Wednesday, March 23, with a 13-6 loss to the 4A Sisters Outlaws. The Prospectors fol- lowed that up on Thurs- day, March 24, with 16-6 win over the 3A Nyssa Bulldogs. Friday’s win was Grant Union/Prairie City’s third. The Prospectors are 3-3 this season. Grant Union/Prairie City’s next game is a con- ference matchup on the road against the Stanfi eld/ Echo Tigers at 11 a.m. Sat- urday. April 2.
