Two teens rescued from
snow near Magone Lake
By STEVEN MITCHELL
Blue Mountain Eagle
PRAIRIE CITY — The
Grant County Sheriff ’s Offi ce
Search and Rescue Team
located two teenage boys
from Mt. Vernon whose lifted
pickup truck got stuck in the
snow near Magone Lake and
returned them safely to their
families.
The teens, ages 16 and 17,
decided to take a spur-of-the-
moment drive to Magone Lake
in the mountains north of Prai-
rie City on the evening of Sun-
day, Jan. 16, via the less-trav-
eled Beech Creek Road route
and got stuck in deep snow,
according to information from
the Sheriff ’s Offi ce.
Family members attempted
to reach the teens but turned
back to avoid getting stuck
themselves and called the Grant
County Emergency Commu-
nications Center at around
2:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 17.
The search team used cell
phone pings to fi nd the gen-
eral area of the teenagers’ last
known location.
Using a Sno-Cat recently
acquired by the Sheriff ’s Offi ce,
Sgt. Dan Komning and Deputy
Savannah Wyllie reached the
missing youth shortly before
6 a.m. Monday.
The teenagers were OK
when the search team reached
them, but their truck had
become stuck and mechanically
disabled.
“Neither youth was prepared
to spend a night out in the cold,”
the Sheriff ’s Offi ce said in a
press release.
The agency reminds the
traveling and adventuring pub-
lic that preparation is key to sur-
vival in the beautiful vastness of
Grant County.
“We hope you explore
safely and responsibly,” the
press release said, noting that
short-notice, spur-of-the-mo-
ment trips usually cause the
most problems.
“Always let someone know
where you are going, and don’t
deviate from that plan,” Sheriff
Todd McKinley said in the press
release. “Should you become
stuck or stranded, please con-
tact the Sheriff ’s Offi ce at 541-
575-1131 or call 911, and we
will assist in getting you help.”

Bobbie was born May 29, 1936 to
Milburn Howard Wood and Mary Ger-
trude (Merkle) Wood in Prairie City,
OR. The eldest of 4 children, she was
raised and attended school in Seneca,
OR. Bobbie graduated from Grant Union
High School, John Day, OR, in 1954. In
school she was active in band, yearbook,
and the school newspaper. She worked
for the D.A. office her senior year.
After school, Bobbie worked for Mor-
gan Freight Co. for two years.
Bobbie married Eugene (Gene) Sabin
Officer on August 25, 1956, moving to
Izee and beginning her life as a ranch wife, mother, homemaker
and seamstress. She was an excellent mother and grandmother
and even better wife. Cooking, cleaning, and maintaining a home

worked the ranch. Bobbie was quick to “adopt” kids as her own,
ones that worked for her as well as friends that the kids brought
home to the ranch.
Bobbie was a professional seamstress, sewing nearly all of the
clothes for herself, her family and many other people around the
county. She was active in the Rosebud Grange in Izee, the County
Elections Board, Episcopal Church, Rainbow Girls, Elkettes and
Hospital Auxilary. Bobbie was a 4-H leader for many years as a
livestock and sewing club leader and served as sewing superin-

Bobbie was very handy and would tackle anything head on
from rewiring the kitchen stove to remodeling a bathroom and
taught her children to do the same. She loved fishing and berry
picking and would jump on a tractor and work the ranch.
In 1986 Bobbie and Gene moved to John Day and purchased
the fabric store here for 10 years; Bobbie lived her dream of own-
ing and operating Bobbie’s Fabrics.
In 1997 she sold the store and joined Gene in real estate as
an agent and office manager for their business Coldwell Banker
Real Estate Firm. Eventually they went independent as Country
Preferred Realty in 2010. Bobbie retired one year later in 2011 at
