12 OCTOBER 27NOVEMBER 3, 2021 CULTURE & HERITAGE CELEBRATING THE HISTORY OF EASTERN OREGON Go trick-or-treat on Sixth Street Umatilla plans variety of Halloween events Oct. 29 By Jennifer Colton Go! Magazine U MATILLA — The city of Umatilla and the Umatilla Chamber of Commerce are partnering to welcome back Halloween events on Friday, Oct. 29, including multiple con- tests, live entertainment and plenty of candy. Chamber Representative Mark Ribich said the event will start quietly and build through the evening. The Trick-or-Treat on Sixth Street will open the celebration, and the fi rst half hour — from 4-4:30 p.m. — is a designated sensory advisory portion to allow those with sen- sory concerns to participate. “We’re asking businesses to keep the noise down that fi rst half hour to let those individu- als move through and enjoy it with everyone else,” he said. Umatilla’s Sixth Street — also Highway 730 — will be closed to vehicles from Swit- zler Avenue to B Street, from 4-7 p.m. During that time, the Uma- tilla Police Department will have a haunted house at the police station, and businesses will give out candy while also participating in a business cos- tume and decoration contest. “All of the businesses in the downtown core — 95% of them — say they’re participating in trick-or-treat this year,” Ribich said. “It’s some tough compe- tition for the contest. People really get into it.” Businesses not within the closed area will still be partici- pating. Some will have candy and costumes at their locations and others will have booths and vehicles set up for a Trunk-or- Treat at Village Square Park. The Umatilla Museum and Historical Society will also have a table at Village Square Park for the pet costume con- test. The competition is open to all pets, from dogs to llamas. Winners of the pet contest 11am-8pm Tuesday-Saturday will be announced on Monday, Nov. 1. After the trick-or-treat events wind down, the city has a Music in the Park concert with STATIK from 7:30-10 p.m., also at Village Square Park. While posted events will happen on Oct. 29, one event is happening now. Umatilla is keeping one of its events from last year’s virtual celebration: the virtual pumpkin carving contest. To participate in the sec- onnd annual contest, pick up a free pumpkin at the Umatilla Visitor Center (or use your own), carve the pumpkin and then post photos on the Face- book page for Umatilla Oregon Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center. Submissions are due by Oct. 29 and should include the name and age of the person who designed and carved the pumpkin. Winners in each category — under 12, 13-20 and 21 and older — will be chosen by the number of likes, and each age group winner will receive gift cards or prizes from Umatilla busi- nesses. Call the Umatilla Chamber of Commerce at 922-4825 for more information.
